Locking nuts on mags

mrssmudge, May 26, 4:41am
As a novice to these I didnt know you needed a special 'key' to get these off.car came with no key, been here there and every damn where trying to find one but the one I need is not common! How much am I looking at to get the nuts broken off so I can replace them with more common locking nuts! I have a perished tyre that I dont want blowing out on the kids n me as no way of changing it at the mo.Grrr, your advice will be valued, Thanks!

hammer a socket on the offending wheel nut & then remove with socket ratchet is the cheapest option. you only need to replace the socket.

Take it too the tyre shop and they should be able to get the locking nuts off, and replace with standard or lock nuts.

the ones with an external locking grip you can hammer a socket onto and un-do them that way. if the grip is internal then probably better to take it to a tyre shop. Theres ways and means to get them off but you certainly wreck the nuts in the process

Most tyre shops will get them off , especially if you offer to buy a replacement set thru them .

What use would something called a lock nut be if it didn't actually lock the wheels on!

If you bought the vehicle with them on, go back to the previous owner and ask for the key. The original would have come with the nuts.

Vicegrips and a hammer!

2nd that. If not, as above, go see a tyre shop, shouldn't cost more than $30 to get them off, then another $20 or so for new ones.

What kind of mags are they btw! Maybe someone in the area has the same key!

get someone to weld a normal nut on top of the lock nut and undo it that way

cold chisel and hammer
allways gets them off

I had to remove a set years ago that the owner lost the "puzzle key" socket used for removing the lock nuts.
I ground a slot in them with an angle grinder and used a brace with a "chisel tip" end on it to remove them, had to grind the chisel tip down a bit to make the fit snug though.
Worked like a charm, good job he had a new spare set as our spares department didn't have any at the time as all the new mag wheels we had were fitted onto show room cars that had been sold and were waiting to be driven away!

Wow, Tonys tyres here tried to undo our locknuts obviously holding the impact gun in his weak hand and picking his nose with his other hand and stripped the guts out of two out four of them, didnt do the job that was supposed to have been done then sent the car off again only to hand the problem back to me.Yea Right.
