Check for a green sticker on the bottom of the trans sump. Which says about long life fluid in transmission. Normally to check fluid level theres a bung in the trans sump that you undo when running. It has a pipe that goses up in the sump and if the fluid is correct it wont come out of that pipe. Theres normally a trans bung for draining and this other bung for check level. Dont get the two confused.

Good luck with this. I have always liked the Beema but have been put off by the stories of woe. Keep anti freeze in the water and an eye on the temperature, if they overheat the engine is toast.

I have had several and only a few issues. One had a bolt blast through the water jacket and bend the camshaft. And another was a Friday car.Current one has something drawing from the battery, we can't identify - battery flat after three weeks away.Again.But I would still stick to the Beamer as car of choice.Only serious downer is that the entrance to our garage is so steep, the exhaust system stops my parking the car in the garage.
Enjoy!

Oh yes, I will probably not use Team McMillan all that often.Nothing wrong with their service - very good, in fact. But they are damned expensive!

Top work! Sounds like you have got yourself a nice one. Like I always say half or more of the reliability of a car comes from how its been treated and how many km's on the clock.
Yours is sounding like a great proposition. Enjoy!

As compared to what!

Lisa534, enjoy the Bimmer, the E39 are a great car and that 2.8 is a beaut of a motor when treated right will last forever. Mega smooth, no wonder BMW won so many awards with the m50/m52 motors.

Yeah ive always had a little laugh when seen transmissions with life long oil in them. Im guessing that is there lifetime of the trans is 100,000kms.

My old 1986 Toyota Cressida 2.8 cost this much new and was one hell of a car I wished I still had.
Lisa, don't listen to the negatives too much. The older the beamer, the better. I had a look at a convertible 1986 BMW a work mate got the other day and she was a little ripper. All cars have issues, some have major issues, some don't. Most wont handle like your 528i and most will have bigger problems. The bid difference is your problems will cost more to fix. Pity, because there is no real reason to charge more for BMW parts. The thing is enjoy it and look after it and when things go wrong, just pay the bills and carry on driving a classic that you got for a bargain.
You might of paid twice the amount for another make and only got half the car, the way I see it, you are winning.
