60 ''ambulance'&-#39; reg in Rotorua alone

That sounds excessive, but remember it does not have to be an emergency "ambulance" to have that designation. I think you might find all st johnvehicle's are registered as ambulances, so they can say to the health board " we have blar blar blar many ambulances. Also its cheaper for them.

6o however ! Somethings not right there.

88 in tauranga that arent ambulances.I say no warning letters. Just issue them the $1000 fine. They knew the risks. If they dont want to pay the fine then dont do the crime. simple

Not so simple. My MIL had an ambulance, the car yard she bought the car had registered it as one. She drove it for a while before she realised, so went through the hoopla of changing it to a car.
Not everyone will realise they're driving an ambulance.
I think caryards that do this should be fined heavily, they're just scum. And no, I can't remember the name of the caryard but think it was in west dorkland.

They can and will be tracked down and fined, its an old scam that surfaces from time to time, last time it was vehicles being reclassified as hearses or body transfer vehicles. The people that are thick enough to do it are so dumb they don't realise that NZTA have all this information at a click of a mouse and know exactly what is registered as what, the last lot were busted and not only had to pay new licence fees at the correct rate, but back fees to the time their flash of brilliance hit them PLUS a fine.I heard on the radio the other day there was a big rise down Dunedin way too who will no doubt get a nasty shock shortly.

i have the perfect solution for this.

make ALL vehicle license fees the same. then it doesnt make any difference what you register it as. not the current $550 worth of variation we have depending on type

Just a thought here would it perhaps be people who have mobility vans for disabled family memebers who have maybe been told they can be registered as ambos! There is one hell of a lot of those vans about these days.
