Fake accounts and bumping auctions prices up

He could have an auto bid placed.

guider1, May 21, 6:15am
Yes it seems to becoming more common. or they get their mate to bid them up. I dont know anyone who would add $1000 rather than $10.
Definately looks suss to me; why would someone up their own bid by $1000 only 3hrs later in the first instance then 2 minutes later in the second instance when no one else had even bid!

pico42, May 21, 6:32am
Could be an autobid.

phillip.weston, May 21, 6:33am
that last bid would have been the upper ceiling of his auto-bid. Someone would have bid $5000 exactly and because his autobid was $5000 and placed earlier, instead of showing both bids trademe will show the autobid instead. If that other person had bid say $4750 the autobid of the new person would have bid $4800 or whatever the minimum next bid amount is.

It is very hard to figure out if a mate has been pushing up bids on another mates auction but i have almost 100% known it has happened to me but there is no way to prove it unless you could prove the two partys had links to each other and had proof of them telling the other to do it.I was bidding on an auction which i put an auto bid up to 100$ which a NEW trader pushed up the auto bid until it reached 101$ then in the last two minutes he asked if his bid could be removed and the seller replied instantly, now this bidder pushed it up all the way from 39$ to the 101$ so i told the seller that if the trader was'nt going to go through with his last bid of 101$ then all other bids should'nt count and told him i was not going to buy the item now as the auctions going ons were very suspicious. They did'nt reply so it DOES happen beware!.

My thoughts also

phillip.weston, May 21, 9:15am
also jezz43 what does it matter if the bidding went from $4000 to $5000 with no bids in between! It's worth more than $5000 anyway so there wasn't any point of mucking around with trivial $10 bids in between. I often bid about 1/2 to 2/3rds of the value of an item/car straight off the bat on $1res auctions, more or less to show I mean business by not fluffing around with $1.50 bids.

_peas, May 21, 9:19am
Yes this could be auto bids, it could be someone who knows what the car is worth (and lets be honest, putting a bid of $2k on this is not going to get you the keys is it!) but you're right, it does seem suspicious that the leading bidder has just joined. always possible, but likely!

_peas, May 21, 9:20am
Yeah what he said.

It looks like a kosher auction with the winner having used an autobid twice. This is how I see bidding going.

At 9:35 thebighussle placed an autobid of $3000, and lead the bidding at $2030.

At 12:54 ninna2 bid $4000, and maxed out thebighussle's autobid.Because the autobid was exceeded it shows in the bidding.

At 1:07 thebighussle placed another autobid of $5000 and again led the bidding at $4010.At 10:47 ninna2 bid $4020 and was immediately trumped by thebighussle's autobid, taking the bidding to $4030.

At this point ninna2 twigged that thebighussle had an autobid, and did the same as they did at 12:54, bidding $5000 this time.Because ninna2's bid only equaled the active autobid, it doesn't show in the bidding. The leading bid is still thebighussle's $5000 autobid. This is one of the quirks of the autobid system.A bid that equals an autobid seems to "disappear", but it is quite logical as the autobid wins as it was placed first.

The same thing happens if 2 bidders place the same bid at the same time.

Had ninna2 bid $5000.01 they would have then led the bidding at that point.

The "new" member's bidding looks pretty legitimate, if anyone's "pushing things along", it's the other bidder. But it looks more like they have reached their limit at this point.

I agree with your analysis mrsdoobercoons. It is an autobid thing and it has happened to me too.

movnon, May 21, 9:29pm
what is the problem! no one is forced to bid more than they are prepared to pay - even the seller can bid on his own sale to push towards the reserve -it is not a sale until the resreve is reached anyway.

vtecintegra, May 21, 9:41pm
Uh the seller cannot bid on their own auctions whether its reached reserve or not

movnon, May 21, 9:51pm
that is standard auction practice in the real world- like I said no one is forced to pay more than they think the item is worth!

fordcrzy, May 22, 6:28am
i never put in "normal" amounts on autobids.i always putan amount just over, to somethig like 4010.50. that way it lessens the chance of someone else having the same autobid amount.

movnon, May 22, 7:31am
simple,if no one bids against the seller, the item is passed in as not reaching the reserve.

phillip.weston, Mar 18, 5:40am
But if you have looked at the auction you will see it is a no reserve auction and it HAS met reserve.
