I've just fitted new springs to the front of the Landrover, and they have a lot more lift than the old ones.I'm wondering how much excess travel I need to have in the shocks.

About 50mm more then the MAX travel possible each end. between each end.
Bump stops compress under impact & springs bow to a small rounded point under max rebound.
Partly depends on how rough you intend to get with the ol girl.

its likely your old springs have just sagged, for example bj70 cruisers are terrible for this. therefore your standard length shocks are still fine

That's what I thought I should have. The standard L/R shocks will go on with the springs compressed, but are about 50mm short with the springs hanging.
I'm also concerned about the front drive shaft and brake hoses.I had to disconnect the drive shaft to locate the axle with the springs sagging, it was only just long enough with the springs compressed.
The old girl does get a bit of use, it's a daily work vehicle and is used for what they built it for, so I'm a bit concerned with with the shocks and drive shaft being at the ends of their travel.
And yes, I got my money's worth out of the old springs, they are a bit pointed on the ends.

The set I replaced on my Surf had thinned in the middle & the end rub pads & spring tips had worn a groove in each layer. Got a 3" lift by doing that job & can carry 350kg's in the back now with only about a 2" max drop. It's been setup more for towing/carrying rather then 4x4ing so shock length not really an issue for me. ******* Try these guys. BIG tv reputation / free forum / lots of gear. Worth a crack.
