ok, cheers franc123 - I've read the clause - from sections (3) and (4) and just so I can qualify what I have read, more or less, I can reuse the black plates that were originally on the car when re registering the car!I'm guessing that there will have to be alot of associated proof accompanied with the application to re-register - proof of ownership, 5 year report, etc.

I think the catch might be that you can only reuse the plates if the rego has lapsed, if the car has been manually deregistered by the owner and the plates handed in or the plates have been lost/destroyed/stolen or otherwise rendered unusuable you would have to renew them.I'm pleased that they have finally seen sense on this issue, there is no reason why they cannot be reused if they are in good legal legible condition.I guess this also means there are no immediate plans to implement a compulsory upgrade to reflectorised plates. It also clears up the legalities about the use of labels on the front if you own an E type Jag or similar.

I agree. It's common sense I reckon. But I have been doing some asking - and it was with PP - about having a black plate re-issued as a PP - I'd have to apply for the plate to be released by the Govt registar for manufacture as a PP and at a cost of $600.and then was told (by PP) they are working on a black plate with white reflective letters. just in the testing stage, due for release later in the year. I'm sure this news will come as good news to alot of folk (being able to "awaken" a cars rego).lets hope it isnt abused and taken away!

Good, thanks for the info. This recent law change will speed the introduction of black and silver PP's, they have no doubt been holding off until they knew which way the lawmakers were going to jump. The mere fact that they were experimenting with it at all suggests they've had plenty of requests from people like ourselves asking for old style plates and who also think that reflectorised plates look hideous on old vehicles somehow!

GUTTED! Only applies to cars which have NOT been re-registered,, Can't change a car with new white plates back to original black plates.

Nice when we get our Vespa registered (hasn't been legally on the road for 30 years) we can re use the black and silver plate on her.

Theres nothing in that legislation that stops you from converting Govt issued white plates to black, if its done properly and neatly and the plate uses the old style font that was in use up until a couple of years ago it looks just as good, but obviously not as nice to have as the original plate.I saw an MG or Austin Healy or whatever it was on the weekend where this had been done and it looked great, even though it was a three letter three number style plate.PP's are a entirely different story, they're not allowed to be changed at all, unless at some stage PP will do remakes to the old spec!

A number of years back i painted the black part of my plate blue to match the car they were mounted on. At that time and as far as i know now, it is illegal to modify a plate in anyway, also including cutting or bending to fit.

Thats an entirely different matter, the background colours of standard plates other than dealer plates have to be white reflectorised or black, not any other colour. If bending plates was illegal there would be a hell of a lot of imports being ticketed if the cops felt like it, as you've no doubt noticed many don't have wide enough space in the bumper to accomodate NZ plates properly.

Yup it is illegal but you can bend plates a little with common sense. Has a lot of cars especially Jap's have the number plate surround often by 1cm or 1.5cm,2cm ish to small. So some you do need to bend the edge of the plate a tiny bit.
