Does anyone know whether the Suzuki comes out on top or is there anything better!

The Vitara has a better 4wd system than the likes of the CRV or Rav4. Those others are more like awd vehicles similar to subarus. OK for ski field roads but no good for off road adventures. That's where the Vitara wins. Just my 2c.

A medium size SUV with a low range transfer case is probably your best option. Have a look at some new Jeep Cherokees with a 3.7 litre V6 petrol engines, but I am told they are pretty thirsty.
