My Sister is buying a new car and is going to look at a 1998 Nissan cefiro excimo 2litre.
Has anyone on here had experience with these and are they a reliable car!

^^ what he said. it's a fairly boring car with hardly any safety features, it may be a 1998 car but it feels like a 1988 car. They will be more or less reliable as the day is long, but so are many many other cars out there. Things to watch out for are stretched timing chains and leaking water pumps. Both aren't exactly a fun experience for a mechanic to replace.

I had a '96. Very comfortable car for long trips, but on a good long trip (Nelson - Chch and back) the best I could get was 10L per 100km. Pretty bad for a 2L car. My 3.8L Commy Ute can beat that.

Go for the bigger engine

#4 about sums it up, they're a smooth and overall pretty reliable vehicle but not a performer by any means, the economy is certainly nothing to write home about for their size. Consider also the NZ new Maxima versions, they are basically the same vehicle .Expect a few electrical niggles as the car gets older, starters, alternators, window switches etc.It does pay to check what options the car has, I came across one recently which had a drivers airbag but no ABS!Surely if you have ABS the chances of needing the airbag are somewhat less!!

Thats if you are a paranoid safety nut.
