How do you tighten the altnator on Daihatsu?

mr_lovebug, May 9, 5:13pm
Please don't laugh, has taken 2 whole days to get the cam belt out & new one put in,now stuck on the altantor belt being TOO loose.

Can someone please tell me how to get it tight!

We tried the screwdriver & that is NOT enough to get the right tension for the belt.

thought they hada bolt through tensioner, loosen the bolt attaching that to the alt. and simply wind in the 12mm stud to tension, tighten the attaching bolt after as it locks the tensioner from unwinding

I think I will be out to my other Daihatsu to see what that car has.

Wonders if there may be something missing!

crzyhrse, May 9, 5:23pm
Yeah. The model.

I think you may have lost some bolts. If there is no adjustment bolt, you can lever the alternator with a pry bar and tighten the locking bolt at the same time. Make sure upper and lower bolts are tight.

mr_lovebug, May 9, 5:27pm
The car is G200s with HC-E motor (1994).

Looks like something might of been used when the car was 1st put together but is not there now (has been off the car many years)the car has just done 104,ooo kms.

mugenb20b, May 9, 5:29pm
Can you put up a pic!

crzyhrse, May 9, 5:30pm
Then use a longer lever.

mr_lovebug, May 9, 5:41pm
Sorry, car not home,it is at cusins place.
I will try & get a photo tomorrow.

skin1235, May 9, 5:50pm
if it has had a slider arm fitted and you cannot adjust to full slider look for obstruction stopping alt from travelling further, also check belt length - you may have to fit a shorter belt but that would depend on how far you can slide the alt back in, if it slides back 2cm then you can shorten belt by 4 cm
assume this is on a charade, most uncommon to have a slider arm

carmedic, May 9, 6:03pm
Mixed up the alternator and the power steering drive belts hence it being too long!

mr_lovebug, May 9, 6:58pm
Will have another look.

Thaks to all for the help/hints/thoughts.

mr_lovebug, May 10, 12:13pm
Is it a case of getting some large grips to pull the alt tighter!

I can see the end of teh sliding braket has a right angle,so one could put some grips on the bolt & end & squeeze them together (tight the belt).

Just had a look at another Daihatsu & it's not until 4pm that I can get back to the chararade, thats what has the loose belt.

mr_lovebug, May 10, 4:55pm
You have hit the nail on the head.

It is MEANT to have that system.
But it is missing the sliding bolt system listed above.

Off to the wreckers tomorrow.

make sure you got the timing belt on correct and the main pully after tightend good or you will ruin the crankshaft if it comes loose seen a few daihatsu with rooted crank from incorrect torqing the main bolts.

mr_lovebug, May 11, 12:52pm
Right got the bloody thing done.

To get the part is Via Japan 10 working days.
Got one from a local wrecker, fitted it & tighten belt & removed it again (now in tool bag).

crzyhrse, May 11, 1:07pm
Why did you remove it! To make it more difficult next time!

It's meant to stay there.

You can tension the belt without it. You just need to use a lever in the right place.

mr_lovebug, May 11, 3:10pm
The part was never removed, was meant to have the adjestor but for reason it don't have one,the bolt that holds the Alt on users pin with a nut, thats close to the same thing on the car.

I have used a tensioner from a Toyota (after drilling out the bolt hole)got the fanbelt to the right tension & then set the Alt in the right place etc.

To lever the Alt you don't have anywhere to place the lever & then you also can't get the spanner in at the same time (tried that).

crzyhrse, May 11, 3:20pm
Looks to me like you removed the adjuster bolt you got from the wrecker after tensioning the belt. But you don't write good England.

mr_lovebug, May 11, 3:30pm
Yeah,never good england.

Not care about that.

crzyhrse, May 12, 5:22pm
Maybe you should.
