I'm getting a little older and consequently a little out of touch as well. But in my experience if you go for the race replica type machines you are not usually going to get anything that has either a good bottom end or midrange, both of which are preferable requirements in a road bike in the real world than anything that has to be wound to the redline to extract good performance regardless of engine capacity. In the earlier days a plus 1000cc machine usually had a mixture of everything right thru the rev range, but as time has moved on, so has the power, as in it has moved up the rev range regardless of engine capacity.

Have you considered something like a Yamaha Fazer 1000. With something like the Fazer you get a combination of styling, practicality and performance.

If you want it all in one package whereby you have bottom end, mid range and top end have a look at a Kawasaki ZX1400 . these things have gonads on their gonads, and believe me, you will never be short of herbs regardless of the reading on the tacho or the gear that you are currently in.

And if none of that tickles your fancy you may have to start looking at what is available in the V-twin range
