the last line of the article says "The truck and trailer would be assessed by Vehicle Testing NZ and police to check for any faults." I would have thought the CVIU report would be enough, without the input of some VTNZ muppet complaining the brake lights are too dim.

My guess is they ment NZTA. Police and CVIU will often use a VTNZ mechanical inspector if one of their own is unavaillable. In some places trusted VTNZ inspectors may be used but a lot depends on the situation.

bit ot but they failed my 2 year old semi trailer because the rear red reflectors were not reflective enough! but it was ok because vtnz sell them and if i bought them there and then they would not enter a fail against my operator rateing.

I can just see it now. "and the VTNZ inspector has concluded that the overriding factor causing the accident was that the window washer was out of water."

Yup or the rear wiper, seen that one before at vtnz.

I saw an episode of an aussie serious crash unit program and a 300zx crashed. The woman was harping on about the 245 17 inch wheels and tyres and got a "mechanics opinion" on if they caused the crash. They may of thrown the speedo out a little but they were low profile, nowhere near enough to throw it out a lot and it was a dry road. They kept pointing the camera at them and farting around. Check for punctures and move on FFS.
Oh and in the end they were doing 160 round a bend or something dumb and just lost it into a concrete wall.
