So I was just having a geez at my timing belt before and noticed that it just runs on flat toothed pulleys, no lips of any kind to hold the belt in. What stops it from walking off the pulleys!

there is probably something on the crank pulley to keep it from just sliding off. i know one time on my car I forgot to put that on when i done the cam belt and the belt slid half way off the cam gears and chewed a cambelt shaped hole in the plastic covers lol

Oh yeah I see in the service manual that there are two sorta curved washers installed on either side of the crank pulley, I guess they control it.

correct so dont ever start it up without the pulley and the shim on.also turning over engine twice by hand is a must befor starting it to see if marks still aligne correct.
