scored a CF jumbo running a 202 and 3 speed auto. i want to change it to a 308 ive just picked up. so question is, do i need to change mounts, front suspension, or gearbox! is there room for the exhaust manifold without having to cut anything away! and where can i get a set of cheviot tridents or ansen sprints!

go for a commodore V6 with overdrive auto. has the diff been changed to cresta diff gears or are you screaming at 100 kph!

not sure on diff, doesnt seem too bad at 100kph. i have a VT commodore, not keen on putting the same or similar engine in a bedford. must have V8 rumble! lol

The 308 wont bolt up to the automatic that you have, it will be a trimatic, they have a different length front shaft different bell housing and not enough friction clutchs to handle the V8. Your Idea is OK but needs a bit more thought. It depends on what model 308 you have as some use different trans missions, so you have to find the right auto trans and especially the flexplate as there are different ones of those. The bedford diff is no use to you unless you do as above poster says and put a set of cresta gears, even then that is OK for a 6cyl but not enough for a V8. You need to set the motor as far back as you can, and probably need a chev diff or something.

is it a dually jumbo, if not then a hilux diff will be way too narrow. a falcon diff is to narrow for a cf.

not a dually, anything you can recommend from here or that someone may have!

the other problem with cfs is no powersteering and the factory brakes are marginal with the factory four cylinder. The only good fix i have seen was someone adapted an hq/hx front end in to a cf. powersteer, big brakes and heavier springs.

from what ive been told, never tried it tho, you can get an XF falcon powersteer unit, it apparently bolts up somehow! can anyone confirm/deny!

big yank tank nine inches are the right width, and they are cheap usually as they are too big for any local cars. get it redrilled for HQ pattern.

i sure fish will have a few beddy mates in his circle of vanners

ive actually been waiting for him to come on and point me in the right direction, he hasnt been seen since friday, must have had a ripper of a weekend

there is no point repowering it so it can go faster if it aint gonna stop. i had a cf with 202 and trimatic and standard brakes, luckily i had the original cf diff in there so the top speed was only 100 kph because i doubt the brakes would have pulled it up from a faster speed, plus the extra weight of the v8, big brakes required

after i insert the engine and gearbox etc, i plan to upgrade the brakes. im aware a fast engine is useless if i cant stop. hence why i have asked if i need to change the front end to support the engine. worst case i have to get something made up for brakes. im not worried

i have a 86 bedford ambulance, with a 202 and 3 speed. it revs like fark at 100k. i am thinking more on saving gas,.than performance, when i take it away somewhere. do i remove the whole diff and get the gears changed to a higher ratio! i have only really dealt with 9 inch diffs in fords. haha

cant do cresta gear swaps anymore as NO-ONE has a pinion seal. I went down that road, all dead ends. Nine inch is your next best choice, or gearbox with overdrive.

quickstitch, you mentioned the commy V6, is there one they made that is fully mechanical! no computer basically. and would a diff from one work also!

i'm not sure, i'm a ford nutter, i just know the V6 goes ok, is a compact motor and has an overdrive auto, and they are plentiful. i just sold a VN commodore for $350, with mags, good running gear. It went in the demo derby on saturday night.

the stockcar boys use them with a carb and dizzy so the motor is no problem, and i think a turbo 700 can be bolted on the rear of them so there is a 4 speed auto that doesn't need a computer

it would be bearable with an overdrive gearbox. You could always step up to a higher profile tyre as well.
jezz43,
Apr 27, 7:30pm
well i plan to have 14 or 15 inch rims on, havent decided on tyre size yet as il match that with whatever i put in. more worried about things going in properly and working. id rather not be dead slow, but in saying that, its not going to be a speed machine either. i just want to cruise comfortably

personally i would use all the electronics, you just need to salvage the whole wiring loom, and maybe the dash and ignition but i'm sure someone here has had more experience with this set-up than me. 'cos i have had none.

lol, fair call. where the hell is fish!

yeah, where is fish. he might be interested in the remains of my panelvan. the guy that bought it wants to cut the front off to repair his damaged falcon. the rear would make a good trailer/towable BBQ/Sleeper or something.
