NZ Trade Certificate, A-Grade Registration, NZ Advanced Trade Certificate or equivalent. OR National Certificate in Automotive Engineering, National Registration or equivalent AND three years relevant experience. OR 'Worked' full-time carrying out repairs and maintenance of cars for five continuous years or more. (Proof is allegedly required but when its from Kazakhstan how does it get checked!) THEN Complete application, supported be a current certifier (employer) PLUS Pay the application fee approx $90-100ish (bit of a guess) PLUS Be a fit and proper person (police check etc) PLUS Have a current full driving licence (for the classes you wish to test) THEN Provide some evidence of prior WOF training (this is where the MTA course can be used) THEN Pass the test to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the VIRM (75% failure rate first time allegedly) THEN Perform a satisfactory WoF under the unnerving eye of NZTA Congratulations you??

If you specifically want to work for VTNZ the following is required.
NZ Trade Certificate, A-Grade Registration, NZ Advanced Trade Certificate or equivalent book learning, so long as no practical engineering or automotive experience is held. OR Suitably thick black rimmed glasses, tan lines to support your regularly wearing socks with your sandles. Proof of membership to a bowles or bridge club. OR 'Worked' full-time writing traffic tickets for the Wellington City Council. The Gestapo, I.R.D or similar government department. THEN Complete dedication to the letter of the VIRM and any reading given by measuring apparatus especially when that conflicts with common sense or there is evidence to said apparatus need calibrating or is malfunctioning. PLUS Pay the application fee approx $90-100ish (bit of a guess) PLUS Be an unfit and incompetent mechanic. PLUS Have a current full driving licence but use a moped and/or public transport as your primary means of transportation. THEN Provide some evidence of prior WOF training (this is where the MTA course can be used) THEN Pass the test to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the VIRM (75% failure rate first time allegedly) THEN Performa satisfactory WoF failure under the unnerving eye of NZTA Congratulations you??

Just to add to these points. any speeding fines within the last two years will require a letter from your employer and yourself explaning how you wont be doing that again. and if you have had a passed DIC or loss of lience then watch out for some keen phone calls requiring all sorts of explanations. Not my story but a recent experience in my work place.

Working in a wrecking yard was qualification enough a few years ago,the inspector at pitstop in Tokoroa achieved that, sort of makes a mockery of a trade qualification system. How do you get a hold of one of these monthly bullitens.

its actually very diffucult for many trade staff to aquire, and when you do the re-inspections are very tough to gain full marks It would be nice if there was more on going training available to avi Mta holds nights but not very often maybe once a year and if your not a mta member then what!
on the other foot and no offence to be made, but how do all the immagrants pouring in with "correct" paper work obtain there cert so easily and then bang work at vtnz!
i know a chap i previously worked with from zimbabwe(spelling) openly told us they had to complete 5 tasks in one day pay xxx$ and then passed with a cert from some college in uk. which was a fake he had never been there and upon questioning further the tasks where changing a wheel, oil change etc
there huge lack of knowledge amazes me and yet there they are

apart from eating large volumes of curry & garlic, being able to write on the check sheet'worn outside the wear tolerances specified', is always a good line. (even better if you ask to define the specs & they are not forthcoming - this falls into the 75percent bullshit failure catorgory! ) No turning back until you return with a nice shiny clean ' worn outside the wear tolerance specified' item for a recheck!

They have just made the requirements for motorcycle AVI to have work experience in the field, not just sit a learners license as they are doing at testing stations.

Before the MTA bought VTNZ, LTNZ (as it was then) actively recruited overseas. What kind of person would wish to relocate to the other side of the world to work at VTNZ through choice! Finally I??
