Getting rid of messy

silicon sealants! What's a good product to clean off old silicon based sealents without damaging the underlying materials & paint! In my case, crappy old badly applied sealant between perspex windows and car on a do-up classic pre65 race car.

I use Prepsol from any auto paint shop

Prepsol, Prepwash or something simular

Scrape off as much as you can and clean up the rest with meths, Sika thinner/cleaner would be better, but I am unsure as to which affect the Sika product would have on the perspex.

prepsol has numerous uses, for anything cleaning!

Ados Solvent is excellent for silicone , check for reactions with your other materials before going full bore

Great for taking vivid off carpet too.

We use a product called X55 which superseded Shellsol or Shellite. The shell products were alcohol based but the X55 is full solvent but seems to not harm cured paint or plastics when only applied to work area and wiped or blown away (not left to sit for long periods of time) it will move stubborn silicone very easily. Also known as brake cleaner when in aerosol cans.

Whose old car have you obtained! When you go to re-fit them have think about painting 50mm of the inside border of each glazing panel black, before you glue or rivet them back in. It looks way, way, better.

57 Morris Minor with MG engine, used to be owned by Cliff Bruning but sat unused for several years after he sold it so needs quite a bit of work to tidy it up.

Great! If it is trimmed (door panels and a front passenger seat) and running on road tyres you can probably run in the ERC Series.

This will be my first go at motorsport participation after many years of watching (a very late start!) ; step one is getting it running in the garage, then trundle around at a couple of trackdays & trials etc.Good to know that there are a couple of series (pre-65 and ERC) where it could run though if the car (and driver) are up to it.

Make a start in Classic Trials. It gets you used to being on the track, gives you time to sort yourself out and effectively, you travel at your own pace.Move up to AES when you are ready and lapping fast enough (better than 1:35 at HD or 1:25 at Pukekohe).

Never too old to start!Average age of drivers in AES & Arrows is 52.
