Methanol

Is it ok to mix a bit of methanol in with your petrol for a classic car if so what ratio. Also does methanol contain lead.

short answer NO.

Yes you could up to 15% before you need to start changing jets in carbs etc, i used to run a open class gearbox kart years ago running on pure methanol, i bascially had to double the size of the jets, it did take quite a bit of setting up as it was a slide carb and i fitted a pump and jet that would shot a jet of fuel straight down the throat of the carb when the throttle was booted full open like say out of corners etc. It only did 130mph with street gearing 50mm of the ground.

Many years ago our company ran a fuel test for Shell [i think] on a mix of standard gas and 15% methanol. We ran it in all the cars and petrol powered trucks [TK's] for a few months.
The idea was the 15% methanol brought the rating up to the higher octane petrol, and was supposed to be cheaper.
Never noticed any difference in how they started or ran, but they certainly used more of it.
All plastic lines and floats were changed to stainless or copper.
There was always the problem of the methanol separating out if too much water got in the tank, but I dont remember that ever happening.
It was called M15. We called it Mi5.

10% at the most to be on the safe side, will bring up your Octane level little.

Thanks everyone. The reason I ask is that my flathead V8 which is totaly rebuilt fouls up the spark plugs when it is on idle because the car is not on the road yet and needs to be under load. I did put about 10% methanol in the tank and it fixes the fouling but I don't know if it is harmful to the internals. I have invested many thousands of dollars in the motor alone and wouldn't want it to be damaged.

run some hotter plugs in it till you get it tuned
