In a nutshell, if you can't afford a new one you can't afford an old one.RR's have always been a toy for the rich to buy new and then flog off when both the factory warranty runs out, they think their luck is about to run out and of course its no longer a talking point with friends, family and neighbours.Steering, suspension, electrics, electronics, gearboxes/transfer cases, ABS, climate control, interior trim falling to bits etc, the fuel and the purchase price is the cheap part. The odd used buyer has had a reasonable run for what they've paid to buy the thing but you can't count on it, they can easily cost you several thousand every year all up if you get a bad one.

Bloody thirsty and underpowered for what they are (165kw). They are old news these days but are jammed packed with technology so are a bit of a risk. They are ahead of thier time, easily the nicest driving SUVs of their time too. Traction control is most likely not working (google 3 amigos P38 Range Rover), and is not a cheap one to fix. The air suspension is known to give problems with age, replacing it with coil springs is common and they still ride like a luxury car but the novelty value is gone. Cooling systems need to be maintained otherwise radiators will block up and they will over head under load. Despite the high price tag the build quality isn't a patch on other luxury brands. They are pretty well designed under neath with off roading in mind, everything tucked up inside the chassis for protection. They are a bloody nice 4wd and if you can afford to gas it up and keep in in good working order (where you will get the most enjoyment from it) then I'd say go for it. If you are like one of these coconuts from south auckland who are image concious and buy it on a $1 deposit look elsewhere as it will bite you on the arse 6 months down the track as you struggle to pay back the finance company.

Also for reference sake I had mine about two years ago when 91 was $1.65/litre (!). It cost $160 akl-wgtn (650km), about 100l from memory. For comparison sake my 4.0 Falcon would do it on half that and 4.0 Jeep Cherokee on about $100. So they are not the easiest on gas, I think the biggest killer is the 4th gear is very short, turning over at 3000rpm at 100kmh, With not a lot of power on tap and weighing over 2.2 tonne that is probably why. They are rated to tow 3.5t, geez I would hate to see the fuel bill if she was a max capacity.

Thanks guys. Basically I want something that can go off road a bit, that will tow a horse float. But in saying that I also want something nice. Hence looking at the rangeys, they have such beautiful interiors. Want a v8, just 'coz. And looking to spend under 10k. If anyone has any suggestions as to what else to look for I'm all ears

My brother got a Disco and when I borrowed to tow have found it not too bad on fuel. He has had a good run out of it. Only cost $7000 at the time.

I think a Grand Cherokee 4.7 V8 would be a better bet, can pick up the earlier ones 1999,2000 models for under 10 grand these days. Awesome off road with no relying on trick electronic shit to do its thing. Can't tow as much as the Range Rover (the Range Rovers tow rating is a bit optimistic imo) but weighs about 4-500kg lighter and has more power. I was looking at getting one at the start of the year but budget didn't stretch that far so settled for the earlier 6 cylinder model which isn't as nice. I've had a couple of Land/Range Rovers and Jeeps and prefer the Jeeps, better off road and more reliable, more of them around for spares, or parts are bloody cheap out of the US/ebay.

Easy to let heart rule over head. Dont let it, RR are cool but when it comes time to fix them unless you are a mechanic they are far from cool.

Get the TD5 Turbo diesel 5 cyl, go great and 800+kms to a tank is bearable this day and age :) got 2 here if you want one ;)
