Blown head gasket?

pcguitarist, Apr 14, 8:53am
The car is a 1973 Mitsi Galant GTO, 2.0 Astron 4 cyl motor with a weber twin carb, electric fuel pump. All of a sudden the car started to run real rough. Smoke poured out the exhaust, especially when stopped. Then I looked closer.the smoke from exhaust actually appears to be coolant (sweet smelling) which fogs up a mirror when placed close together. I also noticed that under the bonnet the 3rd cylinder was bubbling liquid around the spark plug (coolant again). Nothing is leaking into the oil, the oil is fine. Coolant is leaking into one of the cylinders.Now.could this be a cracked head! or just a blown head gasket! What else will need to be fixed besides this.piston rings in the leaking cylinder! Thanks

more than likley a blown head gasket, if its a open deck then its very likley Im not sure about the head cracking, you can only open her up to find out, and if there is no fluid in the sump then i wouldnt worry about your rings

Thanks ginga4lyfe

Cracked heads were common on 70's - 80's Mitsubishis - that'll be the cause. They crack between the water jacket and the spark plug hole just as your's sounds like it has done.

Don't rush to put it back together, take your time, get it modded professionally and you'll have a fast and seriously desirable car in your possession.

yes I woudl agree with the above, the old Astron series is known to crack heads, but more so in the 2.6 where the spacing between bores is smaller. Hopefully you can find a 70s 2.0 Sigma engine somewhere to rob the cylinder head.

Probably caused by corrrosion between the gasket and head or block, or could be cracked head. If it wasn't over heated i would say corrosion, either way it has to come off and checked. Good luck.

Good luck with that.

it's ironic they are never around when you need one the most. I was so sure the user 'mike107' here had a 2L astron spare which was listed on trademe, probably long gone by now.

is there a frost plug in the the block! may of roted through

phillip.weston, Apr 14, 5:03pm
^^ that would just cause a coolant leak outside of the block, the fault the OP is having is coolant is getting into the combustion chamber, and also is collecting around the a spark plug which strongly suggests a cracked head as they tend to crack between a valve seat and the spark plug hole.

Thanks for your opinions everyone, I'll be taking it in to the garage tomorrow to check it out.

The GTO 4G52 Head cracks between the valves of No.3 cylinder, the crack then works it's way right up into the head. Never pulled off a Head and not seen a crack! Sell it quick! O I see you are :-)

there's a 70s Sigma with the 2.0 Astron, complete engine/head etc at Pick a part Avondale at the moment.
