What is the norm in NZ when it comes to test drives by potential buyers! If he requests a test drive, is it ok to insist to be with him in the car!

yeah I always go with them, if they kick up a fuss then tell them it's under your terms only. I don't mind if they put it through its paces, I just don't want it thrashed or missing entirely.

Yep. It's your car. You can insist whatever you like.
He could then choose not to test drive, which to me says he's a tyre kicker anyway. Having the owner accompany me wouldn't put me off a car I was interested.

Don't you mean at your discretion, last time my father and I went shopping for a car we took one for a test drive without you. and yes we did end up buying it.

I always go with the person, I drive first to show them there are no problems. Then they drive. I always give it a wind up for them. Going with them is best it save what something simple turning into a nightmare. If they dont want you to go Id be asking why not and say, as above,my car my rules.

Malaysia. 2001 Toyota Previa. Cars there are terribly expensive. A similar used Previa would cost about NZD35000 and a similar used BMW NZD23000.

My insurance company said specifically NOT to let someone take your car for a test drive unattended as if they choose to not return it, there will be issues with the fact that you let them take it (i.e. they didn't steal it in the first place, it was taken with your permission, but not returned).I was told this as I was changing the insurance of the car I have for sale to make sure under 25s would be covered (I'm nowhere near 25 anymore, so my policy specifically excluded cover :-)This may not be the same for all insurance companies, just my experience.

a consensus then, on accompanying the test drive.

Go with them, hell let them give it balls. I take cars to the limiter test driving and get on a quiet road and throw them around feeling for slop in the bushings and steering. If it breaks then something was wrong before you got in it cause they should be able to put up with one hard run.
Last car I sold I had to tell the guy to wind up the supercharger cause he kept babying it, why would you buy a supercharged car then drive like a nana anyway, at least try before you buy.

Sold the car for $3850 to the second person who test-drove the car.
