4711 is a thing of the past.i thought that was a typo, not sure what the new one is.get to sit it in august looking forward to only one plate rather than 3

How long is the plate and what position !

4711 doesn't apply to just MIG though does it!I thought it was ARC, or is it electric welding generally!

Yeah 4711 applied to all arc welding processes. I held 4711 in MMAW, GMAW and FCAW. But as others have said, 4711 has been phased out now and replaced with something different.

So what is the new qualification then!I was considering doing a 4711 course but won't bother if its being changed!

i believe its the same test, the main difference is if you sit downhand you only get that position,if you sit vertical and pass you get given downhand,if you sit overhead and pass you get the other 2.

Also, if you are going to do welding certs, do MMAW (stick) first. It gives you a really good grounding in all other welding processes, and its a hell of a lot more useful than just bare wire mig.
EDIT if you think about it this way, most wire feed (MIG) processes are like driving an automatic car, while stick, TIG and even gas welding processes are like driving manual.
horizontal 4711 went out in 1988-89.it was covered by having both downhand and vertical.i havent sat the new tickets yet and only flicked through the paper work.reading that sort of stuff bores the sh#t out of me,and really i dont need to know all the ins and outs of it.but my understanding of it is i will do a overhead and get all 3 positions provided i pass, and because my currant 4711 was valid for 3 yrs the new ticketwill be as well

Na i did mine in 2008. though it might have been because I was thinking of doing ASME 8 and 9 so needed 4 positions for that anyway.
