I was told that a 1997 Mitsi Challenger has to be run on 95/98/Ultra rather than regular/91.
is this correct.

if it's the non-GDI 3.0 SOHC then 91 octane will probably be alright, but if it's the 3.5 DOHC or the GDI engine then 95 or 98 is most recommended.

other way around 3.0 MPI requires premium ie 95. 3.5 GDI will run either although premium is specified

Crazy running it on 91 anyway, price difference is negligible and potential for more economy quite good.

GDI's will run perfectly fine on 91 at the expense of a little power

nothing runs "perfectly fine" on NZ 91. run yes - but not "perfectly" fine
if our 91 was the same quality as americas or japans then i would agree with you 100%
