taking the head off and physically cleaning the carbon build-up out or just squirting some crap in the gas that will make it burn! OR am I completely off track altogether!

That used to be called decarbonising or decoking, great if you're still running a Morris Oxford from 1950 odd. They needed it. But these days you are probably meaning fuel injector cleaner

The first is the proper job as done for the last century. A squirt of stuff may help but not for a proper job. Incidentally, with modern oils, and unleaded fuel there is much less carbonbuildup than in cars of 50 years ago. Back then you needed to do it about every 20K miles.My V12 has 140K Km on it and has neverbeen apart. Borescope shows very light carbon but no buildup on piston or in chamber.Years ago in the air force, we used waste OM15 (mineral hydraulic fluid which is red) and dribbled it in the carb until the white smoke out the back blotted out the horizon. Then take the car for a run and most of the carbon is blown out too. I think it had very high detergent in it to prevent foaming, so was ideal. Strictly verboten these eco-friendly days,.

My car sometimes idles way too high and runs on a bit when I turn it off.Some old guy who used to be a mechanic told me it might need a decarb.

I was told that if i wanted to decarb my engine to keep the revs up and drop small amounts of ATF Fluid down the throttle body, creates lots of smoke though but makes one hell of a differance, you can also do this with water, but i wouldnt be too keen on dropping even a cap full of water down the throat, id be VERY carefull

It idles right sometimes but sometimes goes way high when hot. Is always good when cold.

Aah!The 20,000+ mile decoke ritual!
Chipping layers of baked carbon out of a cylinderhead combustion chamber and off the piston crowns was sometimes akin to an archeological dig.
And if the car was new and in for its first decoke and job was entrusted to the local greasepit garage, the car never ran quite as properly as before.

Back when the old man ran a peugeot 404 taxi, they would spray water down the carby throat to decoke it every 30,000 miles I think it was. Used a trigger spray bottle .

a cup of meths in your fuel tank will decoke. Tho i doubt with modern fuels you would ever need to. took the top off the sidevalve the other day and shes clean as a whistle

I would be concerned about using the water method on a modern car in case it clogged the catalytic converter, that said the seafoam guys don't seem to worry about that. but I still think I would. LIke someone else said, there should bea reason for any coke build-up in a modern and that should be delt with.
With regard to emission's like Kaz was saying. Overseas there are some people that run water injection. Both as a means of effectively raising the octane of the fuel and lowering intake temperatures to get better economy/performance. But also as a means of passing emissions testing with some borderline vehicles.
A lot of that sort of thing is just junk science (like the HHO nutters) but water injection is tried and proven and in some circumstances can provide certain benefits.

+1 from me. It works really well and doesn't do any damage if done properly. If you remove the plugs after doing it they will be perfectly clean. I would be reserved about doing it with a car with a cat though as the carbon being spit out might block it.

well hey, sorry for being cautious, I just dont like the idea of possibly hydro locking the engine! , also, it could have been brake fluid that i was told to use, but im almost certain that its ATF that ya can use, and its not like there isnt another person here who has used that method before, and i wasnt the one that mentioned the black box, but i did say that i remember one being there next to the fuse box
