The whole thing sucks anyway. It means overseas tourists from suburbia who have only ever driven a shopping trolley in their home land, can get off an aeroplane with an international driver licence and get into a 6 ton vehicle and drive in our fine land with no experience for the vehicle. Be wary, the next one coming towards you may get you!

does anyone know what size camper or bus you can drive before you need a bus licence!

I would just get a class 2 license if I were you, you can have it in 2 days if you pay $600ish, or 6 months if you pay roughly $200. I would recommend the 2 day option though, as you then go through a driving school and learn to drive from professional instructors. And then you arent limited to a motorhome under 4500kg GVM

Anyone know about the big motor homes in the US!They look like being on a truck chassis and probably need a heavy licence.

Yeah I have heard that too. Reason being you are never gonna actually reach GVM in a camper, most small campers are probably only 500 odd kilos over tare.

The law allows a person with a restricted or full class 1 licence (car) to drive a campervan with a Gross laden Weight (GLW) of 6000kgs or less but with an on road weight not exceeding 4500kgs.

be careful of buses that have been converted or are advertised to be converted, i beleive that buses over 11 meters need to have TWO rear axles when converted to a camper.
