Why would an Officer ask you if you are currently

working prior to handing out a speeding ticket! Is there different rules for working and non working citizens in New Zealand!

saxman99, Apr 15, 7:23am
Yeah, there's a space on the ticket for occupation.I think it's a statistics thing - for whatever reason they like to know who's doing the speeding.I like to make things up.

The next one I'm going to try is "Sorry Officer, that information is protected by the Official Secrets Act and is strictly on a 'Need-to-Know' basis.I'm sure you understand."

flitt, Apr 15, 8:08am
As said, for the most part it is because of the field in the ticket that needs filling.

Secondly, it is an aspect of your 'personal details', which, I believe, under the Land Transport Act you are legally bound to provide. I haven't checked the fine print on that though.

intrade, Apr 15, 8:22am
i think you dont need to tell em anything if you read the finprint like robert menard does.loads of learning however to not say or do something wrong.

big.b-lil.c, Apr 15, 11:48am
they dont ask where you work only your profession. a police officer can ask any questions he/she likes if you answer it must be the truth. if the officer is being polite not a rude a-hole why not just answer and go on your way, he didnt ask if your 13 year old daughter was a virgin ffs. save the not giving information bit for the few that deserve it

johnf_456, Apr 15, 12:57pm
You know you can be charged for giving false details to a policeman.

johnf_456, Apr 15, 12:58pm
Incorrect sorry.

superdave0_13, Apr 15, 3:19pm
A cop said to me once that since that he could see I was on my way to work he was going to go against his better judgement and let me off.If in doubt plead the fifth.

socram, Apr 15, 4:00pm
Whilst stationary, I am unemployed.

As an OAP I can also claim "retired" if I so wish.
"Retired from what, sir!"
"Talent scout for a sheik's harem."

im_andrew, Apr 15, 6:47pm
I once had an officer let me off $800 or so worth of fines because I said I was a student.

carmedic, Apr 15, 7:10pm
That IS correct.
Hence the wording of the NZ Miranda rights warning??

autocars1, Apr 16, 1:49am
and how do you know all this information!

carmedic, Apr 16, 5:04am
We live in a democracy.
Your rights are just that, YOURS and for that reason everyone should be aware of them.
