I suspect that many of those are from businesses or organizations rather than private owners

lk104, Apr 14, 2:16pm
What relevance does that have!
These are still the top 20 sellers.

vtecintegra, Apr 14, 2:17pm
Yeah thats new car sales in general in this country.

All of those models are popular with fleets

morrisman1, Apr 14, 2:18pm
I realise that lk104 but private sales represent better cars more than business sales. In many cases the business will buy whatever is financially best rather than most comfortable, powerful, roomy etc

lk104, Apr 14, 2:29pm
But if the figures came out for private buyers only, then that wouldnt be a true reflection of the top sellers. Fleet buyers and Rental car companies buy on value for money / reliabilty / resale value, hence why Corolla is top seller.

cocabowla, Apr 14, 2:47pm
i read elsewhere that the aussies are taking to the great wall vehicles like ducks (dicks! lol) to water and its right up there sales wise, only one listed here was the x240 here at 97 sales.

lk104, Apr 14, 2:58pm
Yeah I think the mining companies are using themin the mines, just run em into the ground and throw them away after that.

richard198, Apr 14, 2:59pm
I agree; the reasons for fleet purchases are quite different to private purchases.
At any rate it would be interesting to see what Joe public buys as opposed to companies.

vtecintegra, Apr 14, 3:02pm
Actually I think those are mostly private sales.

I know people working at the mines and they're almost exclusively using 70 and 100 series Landcruisers.

No mention of Great Wall, maybe they fell over like the Berlin Wall.

IMO the NZ figures suggest this:

-Despite some bad publicity, Toyota are still doing as well as they have ever done, Corolla is still KING by a long way, and is backed by a strong supporting cast.
-Suzuki have scored a phenomenal hit with the Swift but nobody likes anything else in the range
-Contrary to popular belief and higher fuel prices people still love the Aussie tanks
-Mazdas midrange product is a hell of a lot more exciting than it used to be
-How are Mitsubishi, Nissan and Honda still operating here!
-The softroader class is still doing quite well
-Fleet buyers are still a little weary about the quality of Hyundais, not so much so private buyers.
-Kiwis like used Subaru's, not new ones!
-Quite a lot of people are still being fooled by Holdens rebadging of Daewoos.
-Ford is doing OK but not nearly as good as they'd like/how they used to be
-The VW Golf is attracting much more interest than it used to.

i30 is WELL overpriced in New Zealand. I brought one dealer new for 19 grand in Australia in 2009.

cocabowla, Apr 14, 5:12pm
only read about it a few days ago so would be 2011 figures not 2010.

Give great wall time, once they have more kms and time under there belt we will see if they are any good. Easy to make something look good and cheap on the showroom, but work and time will sort out if they are able to hack it in the real world.

Great Wall have a long way to go before they are truly accepted. There has always been a market at the extreme low end in NZ ie: Lada Niva, Samara, Suzuki Alto, Yugo, Proton and the like. Great Wall is just the latest to enter at the low end. Whether they learn from Hyundai how to catch up to the Japanese or not is up to them.

Sad to see Honda's slide into obscurity, I guess that comes from following up a great car with an Ugly one - '92 Civic to 96 Civic, 94 Accord to 98 Accord, 2001 Civic to 2006 Civic, 2003 Accord Euro to 2008 Accord Euro. Such great engineering wasted in such dull styling and mediocre chassis. I remember in 1995 when Honda were #4 manufacturer in NZ selling 7500+ cars per year and setting targets of #2 (behind Toyota) and 10,000 sales per year. It's about time Honda built some VTEC turbo engines and some turbo diesels too. I hate diesels but given the fuel prices at present, they make sense financially and if anyone can make a diesel fun it's Honda.
