Yesterday I used the charger for my mobile in the car for the first time. So I had it plugged in to the lighter point and had been driving for less than five mins when smoke starts coming out from under the bonnet! Anyone else heard of this happening! Do you think it was the charger that caused it or just a coincedence!

It depends what the smoke was from.
If the smoke was coming from your dashboard, then it'd be more likely.

Hey thanks for the reply, nope it wasn't from the dashboard, it was from under the bonnet. My partner thinks its unrelated but since I pulled the charger out, the car has been fine :/

arcingout your earth.your wire behind it should be all melted now might pay to pull it apart an replace that one wire it will be just wire now no protective coating will be around that one wire now.an it may or will cause more problems for the vehicle from now on

the wire would have been behind the dash but the smoke would have came out though the firewall in your engine bay yes under the hood.

Cheers, I won't be using that charger again, and will get it looked at - Im not a car person so won't attempt at doing it myself lol

Unlikely to be related. Smoke can't make its way from the interior to the exterior except via air vents and for that to have occurred the smoke would have been initially apparent in the passenger compartment.

Just went to check and the charger no longer works, I dont want to ruin anything so I didnt try to force it - its probably just a huge coincedence though because my partner doesn't understand how it could be related either.
Although in saying that hes not a car person either, so will take it to a mechanic and see what the verdict is :)

ive had something similar before. a chinese unbranded car charger, plug it in and it melts the back of the ciggarette lighter and some wires under the hood. turns out it was cos the previous owner didnt want to use the proper stereo wires and linked them off the ciggy lighter, caused something to go wrong and melted wires running to a relay. or so the sparky said
