Knocking from front left

musikcrazee, Apr 10, 7:07am
Hi, wondering if you can help me. I have had this knocking sound for over a year now but it is getting worse. When I turn the wheel very slightly to the right when driving at slow speeds there is a deep knocking sound. Doesn't sound like a cv click and doesn't do it on full lock, only when turned slightly at slow speeds 5-30km/h. I can now feel the knocking though the steering wheel. I had that hub assembly replaced about 500km ago as it had collapsed. Could a rooted hub assembly have caused this problem to develop! Does anyone know what it could be! have been reading online could be inner cv or ball joint! It has been through 2 WOF (VNTZ) and hasn't been picked up. Thank you if you can help me!

what sort of car!make, model, year etc

Does it feel like .

A single click per wheel revolution!
Many clicks^ ^ ^
More of a thump rather then a click or a "knock"
Which part of the car can you "feel" the knock(steering wheel/ brake peddle/ seat/ floor!)!

Thanks for your input. Car is a 1993 toyota corona st191. It is 1 knock per revolution and gets faster as the car gets faster. It does more of a knock not a thump. Now that you mention it it can be felt though the steering wheel, floor and seat

You need to be looking hard at that hub again, a few Toyota models around that era are bad for bearing failure and wear in those drive flanges. If you can rock the wheel slightly with it jacked up, ie play in the bearing, which can be rectified by tightening the CV nut up some more, you are back to square one sorry. The big snag is that second hand ones are often nearly as bad as the one you are taking out.

I was going to mention this before but wanted the other info first.
Almost sounds like a wheel weight sticking out combined with a rim sitting to close to the strut (for whatever reason/ loose/ badly fitted bearing etc)

Have you got alloy mags on it (aftermarket or factory) & have they been balanced with lead clipon weights or sticky lead pads!

could be oppertunity / telling you to fix it .

LOL . ummmm .well . DUH

Hi, it just has the standard steel rims on it which have been balanced about 1k ago with a wheel alignment

Just leave for another year cant get much worse!

I think you are onto something here. Took wheel off and one of the lead clipon weights has had fresh chunks taken out of it. Will see if this makes a difference. Cheers!

Hey that reminds me of a customer complaint when I worked for Toyota.check your tyre, it could be seperating from the belt. I looked all over and tried everything.it was only until I swapped the tyre from left to right that it did it on the other side.we all looked at each other and laughed. We had pulled the whole steering out, the hub assembly, checked bearings etc.and a goddam tyre. Go figure.
