What do you think it would cost to

raine06, Apr 6, 6:38pm
Have the valves replaced on the head (sorry I'm a female and don't know anything about car motors) of a 1996 Mitsubishi Libero.

We have been given an estimated price, but will know the exact price tomorrow sometime, however I would just liek to know what some of you would pay/charge to have that done.

jasongroves, Apr 6, 6:41pm
Are you having them all replaced!

phillip.weston, Apr 6, 6:42pm
huh! are you meaning replace the valves in the cylinder head! was the cam timing mucked up when the cam belt was changed! or was the whole reason the cam belt was changed because the cam belt snapped or slipped! they're an interference engine which obviously causes damage to the valves if the cambelt slips or breaks. It would probably be uneconomical to replace the valves and valve stems which will no doubt be damaged also, it would probably be cheaper in the long run to find a whole complete 2nd hand cylinder head.

raine06, Apr 6, 6:43pm
The mechanic simply said valves, didn't say how many, the estimated price is between $1500 and $1800, so not worth it considering the car wouldn't be worth that much now.

jezz43, Apr 6, 6:44pm
you could buy a 2nd hand engine off here for about 25% of that

raine06, Apr 6, 6:45pm
Yes cylinder head thing :P I don't know wth is wrong with it, but the mechanic said if the timing was off even by a fraction, it'd stop something from working (sorry can't remember all of it) and cause something to squash the valve, I am unhelpful I know!

The timing was set fine, belt wasn't broken, it all started when the water pump got replaced, the car stopped working then.

jezz43, Apr 6, 6:46pm
cambelt dropped or timing was setup wrong, piston hit valve and bent it damaging the head!

phillip.weston, Apr 6, 6:52pm
who did the water pump job! the cambelt has to come off to replace the water pump, so whoever replaced the water pump did not correctly refit the timing belt and therefore the valves have come into contact with the pistons. Usually if it's just one tooth out in either direction it will be fine in terms of clearance, but it would have had to be majorly off in order to do serious damage.

raine06, Apr 6, 6:54pm
I can't remember exactly, but something like,he is pretty sure that there is no power or air (whichever one it is, my memory is terrible) getting through to the head!

fordcrzy, Apr 6, 7:49pm
oh dear raine. unfortunatly you are a prime example of why people get ripped off. go back to your mechanic and get him to put IN WRITING what is wrong with the car.what caused it.and what needs replacing. then everyone will be the wiser. it may be cheaper to replace just the head.but by the fact that it's a mitsi i bet it was pouring out smoke from its dodgy valve guide seals anyway.

raine06, Apr 6, 7:57pm
Hi, thanks for your post, however I am unsure how I am going to get ripped off, as for 1 thing, it isn't my car, 2nd, I am asking on here about price so I can see if its overly expensive, 3rd, I will be calling mechanics tomorrow to compare prices, so myself or my Dp will not be getting ripped off.

The mobile mechanic place WILL NOT be doing any work on my partners car until I have called other mechanics to see if there price is correct or not.

And no, it wasn't pouring out with smoke, we will not drive a car that would, thanks.

franc123, Apr 6, 8:27pm
Someone WILL be being ripped off if they are being asked to pay for engine damage that was caused by either the failure of a recently replaced part and/or faulty workmanship that has mistimed the engine.I'm sure there is more to this story, you've done OK with your explanation but there is bits missing and untruths being told by the people you are dealing with by the sound of it.

unclejake, Apr 6, 10:27pm
Professionally fitted and complete with oil, coolant and a warranty! . I doubt it.

johnf_456, Apr 6, 10:27pm
Correct

jezz43, Apr 7, 4:36am
i used to do engine transplants for around $300 plus cost of engine. that covered a few hours labour and oils, coolants and a 3 month warranty. never had any issues. but it does sound like the OP is being taken for a bit of a ride due to not knowing alot about cars. also my partners best mates boyfriend has a libero, he got his replacement engine fitted at a shop here for $1100, and hes got a 3 month warranty also. cost included everything to make it run again after he blew something.

raine06, Apr 7, 8:08am
Sorry but I do not know why a few of you people think I will get ripped off (or Dp as its his car), no major work is getting done on it until I get quotes from other places, we have been given a another quote from the mechanic this morning, which is $2600 to replace 8 valves, he is calling around about a second hand engine to give Dp a quote.

I have been speaking to Dp and explaining to him that it isn't worth it, he paid 2600 for the car, so imho he is better off using the money he'd be using to repair the car and purchase another car and either sell his other car as parts or keep it and slowly get it fixed.

Now the mechanic may or may not be trying to rip us off, but even if he is trying, it doesn't mean we will let it happen.

ashwattau, Apr 7, 8:25am
Because at this stage they are suspecting that there may be a chance that the engine damage resulted from shoddy work done by the last mechanic who touched the car. If that's the case, then your husband should be keeping his wallet firmly in his pocket. Hence their concerns about being "ripped off".

raine06, Apr 7, 8:26am
The water pump wasn't done by a mechanic.

Ahhhhh so maybe that is why some people in here think we are being ripped off.

ashwattau, Apr 7, 8:44am
Well the way I see it (if what you've said this far is all true), then track down the bloke who did the water pump job and get him to find/fit you a new engine at his expense.

Otherwise, clean, polish, take some tidy photos, write a full & honest description, then whack it up on here for a dollar reserve "as-is-where-is". Given you're in Auckland I think that your auction should get a fair bit of response.

raine06, Apr 7, 8:51am
Hehe my partner and Uncle did the water pump, so it won't be hard to track them down :P

As far as I know, Dp is in agreement with my Uncle and I, we both think its best if he gets the car back, puts the rego on hold, buy another vehicle and then slowly just have the car fixed.

A very expensive lesson for Dp, but he has learnt from it LOL.

raine06, Apr 7, 9:16am
Ok got 2nd for, for a second hand head cylinder they said would cost $2200 with the machining, is that the typical price you'd expect to pay, say if you went out and purchased a 2nd hand cylinder head! Guessing I need to make tons of phone calls later!

franc123, Apr 7, 10:23am
Well that turned out to be false economy didn't it, you shouldn't let people who don't know what they are doing near your car, those of us in the repair trade often benefit greatly from the outcome. As I said earlier there was going to be more to this story!

raine06, Apr 7, 10:30am
Once again, not my car, also I never said a mechanic installed the waterpump.

jasongroves, Oct 7, 5:57pm
Talk to a few wreckers about getting them to supply and fit a 2nd hand head + machining costs.
