looking at buying a sports bike around 250cc what should i look for in relation to reliability n power.wanting something that will keep up with the bigger but easy to learn on,and wont break down in a year.

A 250 that can keep up with the big boys and wont break down and easy to learn on.
Hmmm. Honda VTR250

Maybe an off road bike, can be ridden around forests, beaches etc, will help skill level, keep up with mates within reason, and can either keep it for fun when upgrading time comes and a larger road bike beckons.

Realise you said sports bike, but chucking this idea to you.

i never fell off when i was a learner.but i see your point, as fairings are expensive to fix.

i would suggest the honda hornet 250, its got around 40hp should its not slow, or IF you can afford it the ninja 250r is a good bike.

Get a CBR250rr. Fastest 4 stroke 250s awesome fun and cheap these days ($3k upwards).

Yea they did an article in bikerider couple months back on and older one andit was a bit of a sheep in wolves clothing. As much as a 250 could be.

kaffy1, Mar 29, 9:21pm
Get an Rgv, two stroke bike so needs more attention, but awesome as you can learn a lot about bikes, easy to fix relatively. Oh did I mention- fast as he'll. Some cheap ones on here

Not exactly a learner friendly choice or recommended for learners, and will not be learner legal if they ever introduce the LAMS listed bikes for learners.

nzlflyer, Mar 30, 5:22am
3 year cool off period planned for the LAM's scheme - you should be well and truly on your full license by then.

stevo2, Mar 30, 4:46pm
What's LAM!

ninja_man, Mar 30, 5:05pm
its not shit, read all of the reviews. sure it may not be the most powerful of the 250's, but its a great all round bike, cant call it shit, maybe slow.

noswalg, Mar 30, 5:17pm
Learner Approved Motorcycle system like they use in parts of oz, bikes will not neccessarily be limited to 250cc but have to be under certain power to weight ratio

flybye_in_a_rx7, Mar 30, 5:21pm
fxr150 would be good to learn on. cheap as to run. i learned on a rg150, 2 stroke, nice and light. or if you want something a bit more flash i would go for the cbr250rr

rakaia40, Mar 31, 6:43am
my mate had a hyosung gt 250r. i think was a great leaner bike an real good on fuel an looks an feels like a big bike not a dinky toy. an he was a big boy

ninja_man, Mar 31, 10:46am

The only 250 that keeps up (seriously) with the big boys is the Aprilia 250!
