that starts with S. has over 39,000 cars for sale now. Does that mean that TM are asking far to much to list a motor vehicle! I must say I think $39 is a little to much on the basis it might sell.

Did you notice how many of those 39,000 are dealer listings! A great percentage higher than the number of dealer listings here.
I still find the navigation and colour scheme of Sella a little poor, and I would rather pay $39 + $39 knowing that I will expect a top dollar sale on Trademe, rather than not pay $78 and perhaps sell it for hundreds/thousands less on Sella because no one there is prepared to pay the most for it.

If cost is the issue I will only charge you $15 per car to list on a site. The site has no traffic and no one will see the ad but it is cheaper.
However if you want people to actually see your car you want a site with high traffic volumes. While neither publish the accurate stats, I bet TradeMe is still a long way ahead.
Significant parts of the Sella traffic are probably the auctions and alike rather than regular surfers like here.
