jezz43, Mar 23, 7:21pm
in mercedes engines, i.e 300TE etc. i know the TD versions are turbo diesels. but i cant find what this one is. all i know is its petrol

icemans1, Mar 23, 7:22pm
t is for turd

jezz43, Mar 23, 7:24pm
real funny, did you ask your 3 year old kid for that, or did your brain manage to process it all alone!

phillip.weston, Mar 23, 7:25pm
Touring - ie wagon.

jezz43, Mar 23, 7:26pm
thanks phil

T stands for stationwagon
D in diesel
E is injected
So your TE is a fuel injected station wagon

jezz43, Mar 23, 7:29pm
E meaning injected would only count if it was after the numbers right!
for instance and E320 etc! even tho they are injected (bad example) i thought E class was "economy" range in mercedes line up!

franc123, Mar 23, 7:35pm
No there was a repackaging excercise which confused people, when the E came after the number it denoted it was fuel injected, when of course the whole range became injected it was moved to the front of the model name it simply meant an E class, or MB's intermediate sized vehicle above the C and below the S class. This happened towards the end of the 124 series cars in the mid '90's IIRC.T actually stands for Transporter!

jezz43, Mar 23, 7:38pm
well C class is normally coupes i think, S class is normally a 4 door sedan the size of a tank. A class is a matchbox. G was the 4WDs and M was the city SUVs. is that right!

gammelvind, Mar 23, 7:45pm
E at the end is for injected, but not used after late 90's (I think)
E320 in front is E Class, the mid size.
E is a mid size merc with a 3.2litre engine
From the 50's there was the S class as the big saloon the S following the engine size number, the smallermodels had no designation other than the engine size. Then in the 90's came the change to the Body style letter first, ie S,E, A, C and lately a B class came out.
With a Mercedes-Benz effectively you decide what body style you want and then what engine you want it powered by.An E200 and an E320 look the same but perform quite diferently.

gammelvind, Mar 23, 7:47pm
A C230 is a smaller saloon, a 230C is a 2.3l coupe

franc123, Mar 23, 7:50pm
yes, basically. In the 60's-early '90's C was used for coupes, regardless of the size/series of vehicle, after that the C tag was applied to their new light/medium class (W202) that replaced the 190/190E W201 series in about 1994.Naturally when that happened the C went before the numbers instead of after.Weirdly, all of the W201 series were referred to 190's regardless of what engine was fitted, there were 1.8/2.0/2.3L four and 2.6L six versions, there was no 1.9L!Mind you they couldn't be called 200's as that was already used on the carbed 2.0L versons of the W123/124.

End of line W123 T wagon, pretty high milage and not a tidy one. Have fun, they were lovely cars in their day, expect to spend a few $1000, especially with todays wof regs.

franc123, Mar 23, 8:01pm
Its being got rid of because its costing far too much to keep on the road, agree with above.A lot of those are ex UK and will be rusty dogs too, I'd keep looking.

jezz43, Mar 23, 8:05pm
im not worried about rust, i have access to multitudes of W123 parts from an old job. just wondering overall are they an OK engine or would it be worthwhile transplanting something fun in it!

gammelvind, Mar 23, 8:17pm
The 300 was a pretty reliable block but at that milage and age is pretty much at the end of it's days.

unclejake, Mar 23, 9:07pm
The engines are fine and go for ever, what does go wrong with them is the valve guides or stem seals which can make the motor smokey (potential WOF issue).

An engine transplant into a Merc is a PITA, and I wouldn't entertain it.

If the the car was ex UK I would have expected to see the speedo in miles.

The other thing older Mercs suffer from is terrible rubber weather seals. The perish, leak and encourage rust. For your $1k it is an interesting car, but not a particularly economical one to own or operate

chris_051, Mar 23, 9:42pm
That car has been on here for farkin ages and 330k is bugger all, they will go forever, however as mentioned above valve guides can wear with higher mileage.
The 123 series is regarded as the best Mercedes ever among enthusiasts, I beg to differ but they still have these driving around the middle east and africa.

From memory of living in Germany in 1990's: T is Touring, station wagon; E is Einspritzung, injection; D diesel; S class is Sonderklasse, special class; SL together is Superleichtgewicht, super-lightweight; L is Lange, long wheel base; ML is Mehrspeckleicht, light-duty truck; G is Grundwagen, off road car

lookoutas, Mar 24, 6:15pm
From a non Merc person - that's all interesting.
