have a 1968 car that was last rego. in mid 70s. plates dead. have old plates and papers, that show it wasa nz car. what needs to be done for new rego and wof

It has to go through recompliancing and reregistration, which for something that old is really just an extremely thorough WOF check, its not as involved as a post 1991 car would be.You need to get a form from the cops stating its of no interest to them plus one or two other things I can't remember right now, ring VTNZ for exact details and costs.

Actually no different than a standard WoF. Yje pther thing they may ask for in addition to the Police 'no interest' form is something showing you are entitled to have the car. i.e. a receipt.

OK I realise all the etching and VIN plate etc is extra, but no, on a vehicle first registered prior to 1991 the actual inspection is a WOF check. The inspectors are instructed on this in writing. I forget the bulletin but maybe one of them will show up.
