What went wrong?

Some people just don't realise that there is a difference between a discount and a good deal.

My warped sense of humour enables me to direct customers like that to my competition around the corner.

goose13, Mar 17, 10:27am
Tell them to go to turners and buy there $8000 car and there fees and other bullshit with no backup service and see how they get on,you should of put price up every time he asked.

pandai, Mar 17, 10:36am
Sounds like that dude was a bit of a prick (he probably thought the same about you haha!)

hutchk, Mar 17, 10:44am
Nothing went wrong. Some boofhead wandered on to your yard hoping to impress his sheila. You wouldn't play his little game. He threw a sook and walked up the road to annoy some other poor bastard. Simple as that.

dunbar01, Mar 17, 10:50am
You get some people like that, lets face it. She wanted a car, and so he can get his end away, probibly told her. Let me come with you and I'll get you a great deal. I bet ya she's still looking for a car today. lol

321mat, Mar 17, 10:57am
Um, I don't know about you guys, but I haven't been a to car dealer who won't discount the sticker price, regardless of whether or not it's "on special".

Although having said that, it does seem like the potential buyer did have a serious attitude problem.

phillip.weston, Mar 17, 11:17am
what went wrong is that they aren't realistic. Maybe you could have put a 'was $12,995' sticker on the windscreen to show it was a massive reduction. Unfortunately, as you will already well know, everyone is looking for a bargain so when someone drops a large amount off their price they think they are getting a great deal, never mind the fact that the car at its original price may be the best price example currently on the market.

Someone on here, can't remember who exactly, said they visited a yard that had something to the effect of "The price will only be revealed only after I am convinced you have the money to spend" on the windowcards.

stevel_knievel, Mar 17, 11:34am
They weren't shopping for a car, they were shopping for a bargain. Perhaps instead of just saying "no" you could have explained why it was already a great deal - that at any other car yard the sticker price would be $15000 and while the other dealer may move on the sticker you'd still end up paying several thousand more.

I love the wonderful folk who think that paying in cash magically entitles them to a 33% discount off the asking price on a private sale.

My reply is always along the lines of "cash is the only payment I am willing to take anyway".Which isn't actually true, but it shuts them up.

dunbar01, Mar 17, 12:31pm
Or that other great saying, In God we trust, the rest pay cash.

mrfxit, Mar 17, 12:41pm
LOL, yep agreed

Now it might have been treated a little different if the customer had offered something a lot closer to $9000, & that would have shown room for further haggling, BUT with him sticking to the ONLY offer of $8000 shows him to be a boof headed bully boy.
Can't trust that type to NOT come back later & complain about repairs needed for HIS abuse of the vehicle.

This is just the randomness of random people, I wouldn't take it personally! Maybe they were in no hurry to buy that day, unless an unmissable bargain should happen to fall into their lap! (Or maybe the guy was just being a cock! You get that, especially when there's skirt around.)

Back in late January I spent a Sunday afternoon driving around dealer's yards, sitting in cars and kicking tyres and getting a feel for what my money might be able to buy. One bloke showed me a pearl cream/white Primera wagon, pretty snazzy looking thing with all the factory look-at-me body kit, a bright tan interior, faux-carbon fibre console and the clocks in the middle of the dashboard like a Mini.
I like a car to provide a bit of a tactile experience, as well as having the requisite handling, get up & go, so I was keen to see if this thing's performance lived up to its looks. Sadly it turned me off by being quite noisy and unrefined on the road, for something that was clearly trying to be a bit flasher than the average little two-litre car. And then it gave me a static shock when I climbed out afterwards. So I won't be buying one, but I thanked the guy for his time. He asked me when I expected to be buying, and I said probably in about a months' time. He grinned and assured me this car wouldn't still be here in a month's time.
I happened to drive past his yard on Monday night (almost two months later) and hey, whaddya know! I've been in that car that's still up on the ramps there in the corner.

Moral of this story: A lot of people talk a lot of smack when horse trading!

kazbanz, if you have been selling cars for as long as you say you have you will have come across this before. Its nothing unusual.Get over it, they have.

_peas, Mar 17, 6:57pm

Hey Kaz, In some ways I think I would be the same as that nasty customer. I would have come on your yard seen that car and expected 1000 min off the window price. Its just what I would expect based on the fact that every car I ever brought off a dealer was for at least 1000 off the posted price. I would like to think I would get your point a bit quicker than this custy did thogh, and I totally see where your coming from and agree with your point. Just being honest I, may have felt the same way. Sorry if that makes me appear a nasty bad customer, but I guess its nice coming away with what you "feel" is a great deal even if it is only psychological!

johnf_456, Mar 17, 9:13pm
I refer it to that sometimes.

budgel, Jul 30, 6:19pm
I think those people were concrete brains, but wonder whether you could have steered the conversation towards why they wanted that particular car, and then done them a 'special' deal on finance for the last thousand.

Why was that particular car on special!
