a 2.5L petrol engine verse using a 2.8L deisel van as i wish to travel from christchurch to timaru and return., the distance is 332km's return and i need to know how much money it would cost to see if its cheaper in petrol or deisel.

Will be cheaper in the diesel if all you are doing is filling it with fuel again. If you are paying road user charges, then there won't be a lot of difference.

Your 2.8 diesel van will use about 9 lt/100km. Dont know about the petrol cause you dont say if its a car, van, ute or 4wd

if you dont tow anything then it be cheaer in the petrolprovided the 2,5 is not cracking its head on the way being v6 but fuel wise you ne cheaper with the petrol car and you can overtake fast if you have the need as where with the diesel 2.8 likely a old jappa you wont overtake no one fast. You are only cheaper with the diesel if you dont pay the roaduser charges, and thats illegal and they are cracking down on it soon cops will inspect diesel for tempering divises and lawyers go over your annual roaduser chage usage compaired to where you live and work.

Did you ever stop to consider he might be borrowing the vehicle and not have to pay them, as the owner already has! Might be my assumption, but that is how I read it.
