Sounds like cam chain

wants to exit engine without disassembley
it's one of these little t/cam nissan sunny engines, about 1995.
not the primera/bluebird eng.
is this a common problem !i've never had one of these apart.
the oil is 20k o/d.hyd tensionerstuck !

paul271, Feb 2, 1:41pm
Common issue, hydraulic tensioner first, or worn cam lobes.

skin1235, Feb 2, 1:42pm
could well be the tensioner, or the chain is actually stretched a bit too much for the tensioner to accommodate, at 20k o/due it will really need a bit more than just a change
suggest a proper oil flush etc, aand keep your fingers crossed, the oil galleys going up into the head for the overheads has a very small bored restricterjust under or above the head gasket, if a small bit of loosened gung blocks that the overheads will eventually seize, snapping the cam like a raw carrot

she said ( the owner )
" i stopped the car to put petrol in it, restarted engine and nek minit,
was making this noise "
oh well, more work, which i really don't need !

Not a nice engine to work on.

oh thanx for that M20b

Old dirty oil can make the cam chains noisy as well. the oil galleries on the cam lube pipes are very thin and can often get clog d with gunk if regular oil changes ar'nt made. sometimes a simple engine flush and oil/filter chain can do the world of good.

Get some good oil that engine. First thing I would be doing before getting parts etc is whipping the top off and having a look down the front with a torch and seeing if the tensioner is severely worn or not. You can see on the tensioner assembly how much travel it has available, so if that is going to max out when oil pressure comes up then bingo that is probably your problem.

Its not that bad of a job to do the timing chain on those, just a bit of a prick to get the thermostat housing off. Sump has to come off and to get that you need to take off the front exhaust mount and let it droop.

Mugenb20b is correct, not the easiest engines to work on, they seem a little cramped at the front end. You do not have to take the head off as some instruction sets will suggest.

Yuck, that happened with hydrolic tappets and old 70- 80's Holdens. Sometimes with over revving or to thick an oil. Good luck, old school.
