1uz: factory ecu vs link storm

the link will be around $3.5k (including dyno tune) but is it worth it. I've herd of power gains and/or economy. for the factory ecu i need to pick up an AFM. will the link pay off in the long run!

Mega squirt! Much cheaper but not sure if it has enough outputs etc for 8 injector drivers etc. Links are expensive and they take the pi$$ with accessory pricing.

megasquirt is rubbish - yes there are many people running it but you have to be absolutely careful assembling it and hardly anyone in NZ is familiar enough with it to tune it properly. According to an electronics engineer friend of mine, the board design is horrible too - the power supply circuit gives off interference to some of the inputs.

Depending what year yours is (ie early, late, late VVTi etc) you would probably be better off with the factory ECU for cheapness. Finding a 1UZ AFM would not be a difficult task either. The late 1UZs with VVTi have the ECU tied up with the body control module/immobiliser and are a bitch to use when separated from the car. If you have an early 1UZ then factory ECU is probably easiest.

I should note that if you are planning on doing things like individual throttle bodies, semi-sequential injection and/or wasted spark ignition then the Link G4 storm is probably ideal. The Storm however doesn't have knock sensor inputs and requires an additional knock-link box. The G4 Extreme has two knock sensor inputs (like the factory Toyota ECU) along with being able to run full sequential injection.

its an early crown 1uz and yes, i plan on itbs down the track

There are several different versions of the mega squirt and you can buy them made up so you don't have to do the soldering. Some of the links are pretty crap too. There's thousands of people using them and any competent tuner can tune them. If a tuner can't work out how to tune a ms then I'd have to see them on a motec

G4 Storm is a good solution and represents excellent value for money and will help you get the best out of your engine. As Phillip Weston said, the Xtreme offers a few more fine-tuning goodies for more modified applications if you want to spend a bit more coin.

That's still cheap in the scheme of things. Try to spec up a MoTeC to do the same thing and you'll have no change out of about $14k once wiring and dynoing has been done! :)
