I took the air filter out to clean, the whole assembly is aftermarket and this was nearby unattached. So I'm thinking it was some sort of sensor to do with the original air intake but don't quite understand why it wasn't just taken out if unnecessary.
is it a toyota! corona or similar. looks like a AFM sensor

looks like a temperature sensor to me, but what would I know.

Id say ambient air temperature sensor, for use in air density calculations for fuelling.
get a multimeter and see if the resistance between the terminals changes if you hold the sensor probe between your fingers to warm it up.
