I got a quote on some 2k paint, start to finish, single stage red with no clear. 3L, enough to do the outside of my celica. I normally work with 1k but I'd like to try 2k and even if not this car the 64 rambler needs decent paint anyway.
So I got a price at my local, they are PPG agents so no prize for what their product line is. $378 and that's 4L primer with hardener $107, CV autothane red mixed $220 and hardener for the autothane $51. I've been poking around smitsgroup and stuff looking at metalux with challenger hardener etc but dunno where that would sit on price without ringing and pick/choosing. gunhand or someone will have some idea on price, better, worse, about the same!
I'm not fussed on matching the red perfect, it has been repainted in the rear quarters and the front, might of had a minor accident, can't see any chassis issues, just new panels and craptastic paint. My only holdback is I have some good 1k clearcoat left in the garage so I could do a decent job if I went that way as well.

Google. Otbury Refinish Solutions.
The have a product called Sikkens BT100. Good stuff and very cost effective. $50 per litre plus GST and the hardeners are about $40 per litre. (trade price)
Your pricing above is pretty good though. Especially for the 2k Primer.

I use them a little for little things and they give me trade. But still pays to check :)

Another vote for Otburys. There is also the Autothane range from your PPG dealer which is about half the price of their top range. The Sikkens/ Lesonal systems from Otburys are my preference though. Edit. I just realised your prices were autothane. Headslap.

What are the pigments like! Red is so transparent usually. Painting my racecar you can see stuff underneath it. Then again I use the cheapest shit I can find on that thing. It comes up fine for something that I don't even mask off and have "prepped" by wiping with thinners. I even paint over the doorhandles, trim, paint around stickers I want to keep, it's all rooted anyway so a quick wipe while the paint is wet gets rid of paint in spots I don't want. Funny thing is it looks better than the rattlecan jobs I see driving around south auckland.
Pretty good coverage for a red mate, not had any issues with it.

Holy hell, tempting to just get some out of interest and do a panel for a $50 note, even just to throw on the racecars. Colours are rather drab though. Flame red metallic sounds interesting but there is no pic :|
I wonder how old that stuff is!

Post up some before and after pics, have to get my Celica painted sometime, want to see what it could look like soon!

Could be real old, but as long as the tins are fully sealed and you have some decent lacquer thinner, it will be fine.
Just put a major effort into stirring it while still in the can .

I see he's calling it basecoat, 2pack clear won't stick to acrylic lacquer like it does to basecoat so don't make that mistake.

Yeah I know, my clear is 1k acrylic in the garage, left over from that MR2. Best use it before it goes off badly. Not as hard or durable as 2k but it would have a good shine IF the colour is half decent. I don't mind making it metallic as long as it looks "nice", those are all pastels mostly and I'd have to do the engine bay and on a GT4 celica there is no way I'm tackling that engine bay. Plus I like the red.

The prices between PPG and Metalux products appear to quite simalier by the looks of it.

2nd that. They have good products at really good prices.

I rang papatoetoe, they were more than the PPG trade price. I'll see if that cheap acrylic guy posts back about the flame colour. At any rate if it's bright I want to paint the prelude anyway so a metallic with clear would look mint till I stone it to death with wheelspin

Yeah. Noticed that. He probably has no idea what acrylic lacquer is.
Cheap enough though.

I wouldn't touch that NAPA stuff no matter what you paid me.
The guy selling it on TM has been selling the same colours since 2008, but they were labeled Sherwin Williams then.
What i think he's doing is this.
Buying really old stock by the pallet from the likes of NAPA, O'reily auto parts, PEP boys and all the other discount auto parts stores in the US as it's no longer legal to sell lacquer in 99% of states there.

If I have to roll it on my dirt track car I still don't care.
Although I do think it's old as well.

I sell PPG, just curious as to the price of the primer, also the type! I would suggest autothane HS primer about $200 inc hardner plus gst, topped with autothane CV, price quote seems about right. To be cheaper since you have some 1k clear left I would suggest that you do it in laquer. Yes 2k is harder wearing but are you going bush bashing, if not then use the easier for the home user medium, plus you are familier with it. Autothane CV is a fantastic budget 2k, but only available in solid colours ( unless you are friendly with a very clever paintmixer as we have in Tauranga), but is designed for the commercial market, trucks etc. There are many many wonderful 1k cars out there, hey it was the main paint from the 60's through 90's. Most 2k jobs today actually is the primer and clear coats only.
