remove the gunge ! Got sold a car (very Cheap) that the person had put synthetic oil in on top of normal oil. The result is black gunk burnt on thro-out motor. Have tappet cover off now and its not pretty. We did an oil and filter changewhen we got it and after less than 400km its black so took top off. Its caked on but not 100% dry under there. There is still normal thickness oil on dip stick but as I said, its black. What, if anything, will work to clean it !

Do this at your own risk. You might have some success running some oil that is designed for older diesels (sort of stuff you would put in an older hilux) it has a lot of detergents in it and will really clean things out. Probably best to buy a big pack and do a couple or three more oil changes in fairly quick succession. Don't forget to change the filter every time.
The risk is not the oil (it is usually quite suitably rated) but obviously once you start unclogging stuff it can end up where you don't want it.
The other one to consider is "Powerup" I am not usually one for wonder potions but this also has a strong detergent and will also provide boundary lubrication which is excellent for an engine that might have some blocked or partially blocked oil galleries.
Hope that helps.

Are you sure the mixture of oils was the cause of the problem! I??

DON'T DO IT ! If you apsolutely must then use some degreaser and scrub inside the riocker cover till its shiney again. But physically scraping off that baked on crud inside the engineallmost certainly will mean you end opwith the oil pickup filter clogged with crud over and over again untill the loose crud has finally gone. --many oilchanges and pan removals later

Use diesel oil. it hasdetergents in it which will help to slowly remove the muck. Will need to do several changes. Replace oil filter each time. If you are worried about using diesel oil look on the bottle because most of them state for petrol and diesel engines.

The sludge was not caused by mixing synthetic oil with mineral oil. That's a crock of shit where ever you got that idea from. Sludge is caused by lack of oil changes at some point in time.
What I would do, is remove the sump and clean the oil pick up screen, nothing else.
Today, I got a job to replace a leaking rocker cover gasket on an import Corolla, 2ZZ-GE engine. Well, when I pulled the cover off, there was sludge everywhere, and worse still, no hardening left on the primary cam lobes and roller rockers.

My car was like that when I first got it, last owner nearly ran the oil bone dry. Just run good oil through it, a good filter and do changes much sooner than you normally would (e.g. every 4-5,000kms, if not sooner). Had mine for 4 years now and doesn't skip a beat, and the oils a lot cleaner now!

I'd keep the cam cover off, pull the sump off then scrub all the crap off with diesel as best you can then make sure all the galleries are clear and put it back together with a new filter and diesel oil or just cheap oil with a litre of ATF, run it for a good drive then change it again for some new oil.
