I think I was quoted $80 for a 4x4 a few years back.

I'm sorry but if the paint is in tip top shiney condition then why are you wanting to do it! I'm not being sarcastic at al here but I'm trying to establish what is actually wrong with the car. Does it need a paint touch up guy or ust a really decent valet

Careful, Lasers of 80's and many newer models have a layer of "Clear" or "lacquer" over the paint ( especially metallics). Cutting damages this. You might only need a buff or polish.

2001.95 percent of the car was excellent but I had a sticker that left a mark. Now car is smeary and dull after my dad got to it.Just want to know how much I might be up for.I meant it wasnt faded, dull chipped etc.

May i suggest you do some research before giving out ill-informed advice.

Ok given your description I doubt you will need a cut and polish on most of the car -Just a clean up of the sticker residuethen a good polish of the rest of the car.
ksr,
Feb 16, 4:41pm
No because I couldn't get rid of the sticker mark.Anyway, do you have any idea of cost!Thx

Depends how bad it is.Check services: polish on TME.I had Glossmaster (AJ) do my boat & he is doing my race car and he can make a real roughy gleam like showroom.About $150 or so, but you get cut, polish, touchup and carnauba wax.

OP can you put up a pick of the sticker "mark" please.
For the people such as rob-man and myself who are car painters and kaz' who .shall i say is in the business of ensuring cars look their best it's a bit hard to give informed advice without having even a vague visual idea of the problem.

Im thinking of doing my car so a bit worried now. How does cutting damage my metallic finish!
gammelvind,
Feb 16, 5:39pm
Lol Gunhand you know Jenny188 is talking a lot of tosh. We are both in the industry and buff clear coat all the time. It amazes me just how ill informed some people are. Jenny188 just wander down to your local auto painter and I am sure they will let you watch one of their staff buffing clear, or any paint surface for that mater.

Why cut clear coat if it doesn't need it! Ya'll fire up about it, but unless cutting compound has somehow changed over night, it still removes a layer from the surface of the car. No point doing this if all it needs is a coat of polish and a layer of wax.
In the wrong hands cutting compound will leave scratches and swirling.
Sounds like fair advice to me.
OP - you need about 25 bucks and a couple of old Tshirts to do the job yourself.

If indeed we were talking 80s laser there may well be some truth to saying cutting could damge it. But it would be more of a case of buffing/cutting through the old clear coat if it wasnt finishd in a 2k clear. And cutting old non 2k clears does take a different approach. But a 2001 car should cope very well with a good hard cut and polish. And of course you have to know what people think they mean when they say "CUT". probably mean different things to different people.

If I didn't have an arm injury I would - trust me!

NO.
Ford and Holden in NZ and Australia in the 80's actually painted some of their model with NO CLEAR at all. LOL.
As 2K paints became the norm for vehicles assembly lines. Ford and Holden went the cheap way by spraying their car in 2K metallics. Instead of 1k basecoat metallic with 2k clear on top.
It was a hard lesson they learned, as the elements and sun rapidly destroyed the colours.
The metallic aluminium flakes simply oxidised due to having no clear coat to protect it.
They were shiny for a while onlybecause of the acrylic or polyester resins they were binded with.

I wonder how Ford got away with it. Maybe they had good lawyers. lol.

what coons were effected do you know!I dont remember any with that problem. Mind you I wasnt painting cars in the mid eighties either. Ive done a trailer in 2k metallic. last time I seen it it still looked ok. Should only be used on rims and wheelbarrows lol
