Ok - very confused - is it better to go for a later model car with higher km or older car with lower kms - soooo confused - any views !

depends on type of car, age and service history.

Depends on the car and the difference in KM really. If the new car has lots of kms then chances are it has a lot of hot running and if it was going to have any major issues it probably would have had them already.
As long as the newer car had a proper service history and was in good nick still then Id be considering that one but remember there will probably be differences in safety/engines/economy/transmi- ssion/features and so on between the two vehicles which may be a larger influence in your purchasing decision.

Go for a car that has been serviced regularly, is in good condition, and you like.

Thanks for speedy replies - I guess I'm just trying to convince myself to go for the more modern car and get over the Kms.

What sort of car and KM are we looking at here!
A car with good highway running probably wont need any attention till 300,000km as a ballpark figure. If its been over gravel roads a lot then suspension could be knackered.
What we all are saying is there are too many other variables to be able to give you a vanilla answer

A mazda 6 wagon - one with 105km 2008 2.5 vs 2007 70km 2.3 Both about same price. Oops 2008 is NZ vs 2007 is an import - should've added that.

Both have full service history!

that's a no brainer, go for the '08 2.5 - what difference does 35,000kms make really! with those kms both would appear to be ex-lease vehicles anyway.

also with the 07 being the 2.3 it sounds like it's the last of the old shape still! I would easily opt for the 08 onwards shape over the earlier shape if it's the same price.

Thanks heaps for replies - sort of thought so.

Id get the NZ new one with higher kms. No brainer there (subject to inspection of course)
The nz new one wont have every second dial in japanese and radio will work, quite important in vehicles that dont have replaceable radios (unless you want to put up with a band expander of course)

And the NZ new one will have cruise control as well.

have been in plenty of import Atenzas and haven't seen any japanese writing anywhere on the dials or controls! yes the radio will need a band expander but you could always find a NZ radio to put in place. Have seen plenty of Atenzas with cruise also - the base NZ models don't have cruise.

I'd rather have a high mileage car with service history than a low mileage car with none.

I wouldn't. 'Service history!' What is that really! Receipts for oil changes! After doing all the usual checks to ensure it is sound, I would rather go for a later model car with higher K's. You get all the benefits of modern technology as well as the feel good factor of driving a 'modern' later model car.

Oil changes ARE quite important.

Agreed. My point is, if the oil is clean and the condition of the car and it's ownership history stacks up, I don't think a pile of invoices for prior oil changes is that important. Yes, it's nice to have a 'service history', but not essential.

ALLOWINGthat both cars are in the same condition and drive well.
Thisis a question asked of me at least once a day. My answer is that it is ENTIRELY a personal choice based on an individuals personal circumstances 2 extremes--85 year old goes to the shops once a week so atravels maybee 4000km a year. 25 year old sales reptravells 40000km a year. Now these two people I feel have totally different requirements. The 85 year old is better off with the newest car they can purchase The 25 year oldneeds the lowest milage.
So OP ask yourself --how many k's do I travel each day/week. Now given there is a fixed budget to work with and two choices I then reccomend that the 25 year old looks at the earliest version of a particular model run. and the 85 year old the newest.

No but the 2.5 should, they're pretty highly specced

I know that. I was just making a point that all NZ models don't have cruise and that import models can have cruise, despite what was said above.

General answer for a general question:
Years may take their toll on a car. Kilometres certainly do.

Thanks for all the info - we just purchased the 2008 model.
