There has to be checks and balances on the way Police do things and that was what the Children's Commissioner was about in this instance.

I'm pretty sure there would have been a lot of sympathy or concern for those kids - had they stopped when first approached, not had to be stopped with road spikes, had there been no firearms in the vehicle - even a m16 lookalike bb still looks like an m16 assault rifle, had they not been on a spree of burglaries and vehicle stealing for several days etc if they'd been a little realistic in the beginning they would have been treated better I do get your point though - the child commiss has to be seen to be checking that the treatment they got was not undue, undeserved and befitting their age and physical status, seriously doubt there will be any excess for him to respond to

Blatant criminals like this wavered their rights on the 1st day of crime. IMO
kazbanz,

I feel this might set a precedent actually. At what age should a person be treated as a death threat to members of society! and dealt with by law enforcemet appropriately! given the driver was behind the wheel--and prepared to use one deadly weapon whilst carrying another deadly weapon in the car (yes only and air gun but did the cops know that!) The whole--I'm a kid you can't touch me issue needs to be sorted I feel

It's a tough world, when armed criminals get confronted by armed Policemen. Won't anybody think of the CHILDREN! (The criminal, delinquent, need-a-smack-in-the-head children!)
At least they only stole and thrashed an S-Type, not a proper Jaguar.

5 day crime spree.in possession of a firearm (imitation or not doesn't matter).driving a stolen car and refusing to stop. And people are upset that these two scum are arrested at gunpoint!Maybe the Childrens Commisioner should spend more time looking after the welfare of the young VICTIMS of crime.

no sympathy for them at all, and as for the mother welcoming the complaint ,she needs a reality check, is it another case of , 'but he's really a good boy',! . no he's actually a badPOS ,and his mate is too, trouble is in this way over the top PC country of ours there's too many people looking after the crims

He couldnt look at the photo as it was just to awful. what a load of PC crap yet again. The little turds would have had it a hell of alot worse if in the states. Mind you if over there they probably already be inside for the 20 other offences and not out doing more crime like out half arsed system allows. And thy wonder why youth (and adults) are basicly doing what they like these days. If they get some so called civil right breached they snivel off to someone and complain. If there man enough to do the crime there man enough to have a gun poked in there head, and a knee in the back, dog bite, baton bruise, cuff marks and a bump on the head were the didnt duck whilst getting in the police car.

If you want to participate in criminal activities then you have to expect to be treated as a criminal.with weapons such as a stolen vehicle and firearms! a ferk'n dangerous criminal at that.

"I couldn't look at the photos. They were just too awful."
Problem with so many people these days. Too PC, too much babying of people who should know better.
"The pair had been tracked by police through Kaikoura, Seddon, Blenheim, Havelock and Rai Valley, taking cars and stealing property. "
They're criminals. Enough said. They got everything they deserved (except the time in prison, 2 years for TWENTY charges! Bull. Should be a lifer)

Bet those scumbag thugs thought they were real tough when they decided to play their game of Grand Theft Auto out in the real world.
Play the big boy's game, pay a big boy's price. End of story. The cops should have shot them and saved the rest of us a fortune.

What the Fcuk! Hello stupid "Childrens Commisioner" These are not "children" once you hit 13, you are not a child anymore, you are a teenager. I hate it when they refer to 13 to 19 year old's as children. It's like at high school and they'll say "mum or dad can pick up their children after camp".Arrrrrgghhhh- ! , they're friggin 13 or 16 years old. just say Son or Daughter - not "children".
These morons are not a couple of 9 year olds playing soccer on a busy road.
The 17 year old was charged were "20 offences including burglary, unlawfully taking motor vehicles and possession of a firearm following the incident. His 15-year-old associate was dealt with in the Youth Court.
Standard law enforcement world-wide is "Until we have secured that weapon - it is real gun".
If you're 13, 15 years old, once you turn 18 years old, then they should be able to say "Ok sunshine, when you were 14, you did all this, now you're 18, you can now serve the 10 years time".

"Better the inconvenience of too much liberty than the inconvenience of too little".
You knuckleheads with your faux-outrage should look that one up and try to understand it. Have a look at Syria - it should help.

so bend the rules rather than ensure they're obeyed!, go easy on the younguns ( for what reason! - let them stuffup big or small time a few times before insisting they tow the line - fine, but where do you draw the line - before they kill someone, or after!) maybe an inconvenience but as they say ' it's all fun til someone puts your eye out -permanent damage is not fun for the victim democracy is what we live by, some are not so lucky, but even a democracy is 51% bullying the 49%, and it would be damn hard to always be in the 51%, but the other side of democracy says we have the right to voice our opinions for or against - even within that we do still have to live by the democratic rules ( laws ) and if the laws are broken then there has to be a consequence - otherwise why have laws
