Removing Dash board

shagged, Feb 18, 4:45pm
if you remove the dash board from inside a 2004 toyota caldina are the air bags going to deploy!

I ask as I want to pull it out as much as possible to clean behind/under it as the car smells of cigarette smoke from the previous owner. I have had the rest of the car groomed but the smell is still there and it seems to only smell around the dash area.especially when the cars been sitting in the sun

Shagged You CAN and should unplug the airbags as part of the removal process. Its not as hard as is made out but you do still need to be darned carefull of damaging the clock spring.
All that said --you will be amazed how much of that front panel area you can remove without going the last step to removing the whole dash.
if the seats came out along with the centre console -then into the ac/sterio controls-remove the inspection panels and glove box. even remove the instrument cluster. peel the door skins off and remove the a/c dust filter and wash all that out -and as far down the AC blower tubes as you can.
Wet vac the roof lining AGAINusing boiling hot water -do the front seats and carpets with it as well Wash every exposed bit of plastic and metal with clean hot soapy water
Try that and I bet the smell will be gone

i dont think you should remove the dasboard. i think you got no idea how mutch screws there are You can use special cleaners and the smoke is unlikely behind the Dash it be in the seats carpet ceiling . You will never ever manage to get the dashboard back on correctly plus the smell will still be there. special aircon odor spray is on the market to kill odours.

Most of the smoke will be stored in the wiring loom , short one out or undo the wrong plug and you will let all the smoke out.

removing a late model dashboard is a job I would avoid at all costs, and no guarantee that you will get rid of the smoke smell ,just leave the doors open on a breezy day.

I'd pay special attention to the ash tray area, and just above it,
you should be able to remove the metal plate inside and above the ashtray, and quite likely you'll also see staining to the underpart of whatever is above that
these may be able to be removed and cleaned

it also takes some pretty strong stuff to completely remove the odour from the ashtray, a soak in white vinegar etc is insufficient

You might reconsider removing the entire dashboard after watching this video. It's not a Toyota Caldina, but a similar job. www.youtube.com/watch!v=S-eK5fH9f3s

These don't work I have tried them. As I said I have had the car professionally groomed and they only place that smells is under the dash and air con.and yes I have replaced the cabin filter.

That's funny, it worked for me every time.

well it didn't work in my car. what did you use

Love that vid.

shagged--I typed a massive reply explaining step by step what to do --short version
I know 100% the professional groom would not have been indepth enough to remove deep cabin smoke smells--I ALWAYS strip the cabin out in severe cases but have never actually removed the dashboard itself -just everything around and in it

Cool video. but gives me the shits when I see them pulling it out against the exposed thread on the gear stick, then later she puts the knob back on. A scratched HVAC control panel would be worth heaps.
