I think you will find it has electric power steering, which does not like flat batteries as it draws lots of current.

Sue take it down to hunts auto electrical -view road-when i was getting our work fleetserviced at zero to 100 had a real mixed bag of results. Dont even get me started on the cam belt they did on one of our 4x4 must have been a tooth or two out- whoever road tested it must have been incompetent- i wont even go there with the nearly $1000 mudguard for a little flatdeck truck- OPit may be a good deal but i would go to an auto sparkie

the alternators also have a clutch type pully that alone is around the$280 mark and supplied with alt

Get a second opinion to make sure it is the alternator. But wow, $850 for a second hand unit including install is pretty expensive. If it has the 2.0 or 2.3 engine then im sure the Mazda 6 alternator should fit, and you can pick them up new for around $350-$400 off trademe.

All that hassle and expense for a tiny bit of fuel efficiency. It's certainly not worthwhile in my book.

Get back to the old fashioned ACR34 type alternators I say - bugger all to fail in them!
bigfatmat1,
Feb 19, 7:47pm
you mean a 34 amp 17 acr that would make ya battery go flat on a modern car you nee 80-120 amps. also being lucas those alternators were shit and same amount to fail in them rotor, stator, regulator, rectifier (weak) slip ring and housings that flog out. and small brushes

I agree, I had a quote to do mine in my Mazda 6 at around a grand. I bought a swap a part from a local auto sparky and had my garage put it in for less than half that , around $400. The auto sparky gave me a fully reconditioned part and I had to give them back the old one so they could recondition that and sell it to the next guy, great idea.

Recond' parts/exchages isn't a new concept. Used to be done all the time, but kids today are all about the "throw away" living.
Some of us with older cars have no choice but to exchange. As for the OP that price sounds very steep, don't you just bolt the alternator onto the mounting on the engine and slap the fan belt on!

I looked up the price of a new alternator today and there are 3 diff types they are $303 $450 and $536 80 90 and 110 amp respectively. all ecu controlled and clutch pulleys. +gst all genuine mitsi units
bigfatmat1,

and as for the throw away living its because parts outweight the cost of a new unit or the parts are not available

Far comment, I've caught myself doing it. The crazy thing was, it was cheaper for me to get the parts from the UK, including the shipping, then it was to get them here, saved a few hundred $.
I guess I mean it on a larger scale, like tossing a whole car away as it needs 3 new tyres and it's cheaper to get a 'new' car. Just seems sad.

+1 for a rebuild/reconditioned one.
I had the alternator go in the Commie almost 5 years ago. Mechanic rebuilt with new bearing and brush kit for 400 all up, still going strong.

most of the time mechanics out source to a local sparky- so the price goes up - and a lot of the time now they really cant be bothered rebuilding the cost is now cheaper to replace with new.

First thing I would recomend to anyone who is not savy with cars when you have electrical problems on a driving car,is to go to your battery man,he'll do a spot check for free, the battery and charging system. Then for a older car like this could pick up an altenator from a wrecker and ring up a few garages to get quotes to fit if you don't know someone who is able to do it.Anything over $200 IMO this job too much.
