Looking at purchasing a Toyota Hiace van for work. Am keen on the 2.4 petrol with the 2RZ engine. Pros and cons gratefully accepted. Looking at paying up to $12000. Thanks in advance

What you pay is up to you, but check for rust around the windscreen (inside too). Gearboxes and diffs are bullet proof, but the gear linkages can get sloppy after 500 000kms, easily fixed anyway.

2RZ motor will keep going and going, but I would advise you to get the EFi one, not the carby.

The only downfall to these Hiaces are access to the engine, easy to service and tune, but pulling the floor out is required if any major work needs to be done, no big drama. However, it takes about 2 hours to change the alternator belt, what a prick of an idea, especially if it's got A/C and P/S.

All in all, great, boringly reliable vans, just check for rust, and make sure the sliding doors open and close smoothly.

Thanks for the reply. After a '98 onwards. What year are the EFi ones! Thanks

'98 + should be EFi, only the early 90's were carburetted.

I've got a '95 2.4 ZL which has the carburetted version of the engine. 200,000 kms. Owned it 7 years.
Have had to have spots of rust in rear door and top of rear body fixed.
Prone to surface rust underneath the front - fishoilene holding it in check.
Power steering belt wore out. Battery replaced a couple of times.
Otherwise nothing else has needed to be done to it at all, apart from oil changes etc.
Toyota service recommend regular diff oil changes or diff will get noisy.
Approximately 12 L/100km (24 mpg)

Paid $5000 for it in 2004.
