Cost of two shock absorbers - fitted.

angie-maree, Feb 27, 9:39am
Hi there, apparently I need two new standard shock absorbers for my car (Mazda Familia) I was quoted a price but wondered if anyone here had an idea what was the average cost of this job. TIA.

andrea_w, Feb 27, 9:40am
More details about the car are needed. what year is it!

angie-maree, Feb 27, 9:41am
'94 (ancient lol)

outbidyou2, Feb 27, 9:41am
$176.56 + GST

angie-maree, Feb 27, 9:42am
Lordy, for two outbidyou2!

owene, Feb 27, 9:44am
I'll do it for $176.50

angie-maree, Feb 27, 9:45am
Is that pretty much standard for two shocks fitted!

un_known, Feb 27, 9:46am
um thats cheap. real cheap. especially if it is fitted.
pretty sure if u go to supercheap you'll get quoted around $130 each.

count yourself lucky i got quoted $1600 for a set of shocks for my car.

tonyrockyhorror, Feb 27, 9:47am
More like each, plus fitting and a wheel alignment.

angie-maree, Feb 27, 9:50am
Ok so I was quoted around $500 for two standard shocks, fitted, wheel alignment is gonna be an extra $69 so what I'm trying to figure out is if that's about the standard charge.

outbidyou2, Feb 27, 9:54am
I dont know, what $150 each shocks roughly, 2 hours labour at $70 p/hr, + GST, well thats over $500. People gotta realise that things don't cost $50 anymore

outbidyou2, Feb 27, 9:55am
and I dont mean to be rude angie-maree, things have just got expensive

angie-maree, Feb 27, 9:56am
That's cool outbidyou2, I just wanted an idea if that figure was in the right ball park, which it sounds like it is. Ty.

un_known, Feb 27, 9:58am
man u had me thinking you could get really good deals on shocks.shouldve known better.

Like you I was told I needed two new shocks for my car too, though only one was shot. Was quoted $660 for the job. I took my car elsewhere and had the faulty one replaced by a second-hand one for $100. The next day I took my car to a testing station and got a WOF, no problem.

OP- I replaced all four shocks on a 2002 Stagea $454ea for the fronts retail, $299ea for the rears retail. Add 1.5 hours labour and a wheel alignment. The result is a much smoother ride, much better cornering and the car stops quicker.
If I had your car and I was keeping it for some time I would replace all four shocks with new KYB's from Supercheap when they are on sale. Add fitting of course.
If you don't want to keep your car for to long or have very little money I would put a pair of good second hand shocks in.

2 shocks in those are an hours labour at very most, thats with smoko. see if you can get a mate or someone with cash-on-account at repco. that will cut the whole lot in half

ceebee2, Feb 28, 1:33am
This is NOT a trade recommendation as it will affect car handling alot due to the stiffer new shock. I always replace shocks as a matched pair, (front or rear)

kazbanz, Feb 28, 2:36am
Generally cars come with 2 sets of shock absorbers. Being 2 front and 2 rear.
There are also several TYPE of shock absorbers.
A simple bicycle pump type rear shock with a bolt on the top and the bottom is the simplest and cost about $200 for a pair fitted
From there things go up in price. One possible issue is that due to the age of your car the shock isn't off the shelfand has to be built up for you.
Asa point of reference for you.I just paid $650.00 for a set of front shocks for a 2003 Nissan Pressage and around $400 for a set for a Toyota Allex 2004fitted. Now I buy shocks regularly so get trade price.
I would NEVER reccomend fitting just one shock absorber to a vehicle. except in a dire emergency.

edangus, Feb 28, 6:11am
Around $600 incl GST seems reasonable. Not all shocks are created equal, just like not all tradesman are either.

johnf_456, Feb 28, 6:17am
As above, if going new shocks and you intend on holding onto the car. Get them in pairs, if not or the car is going to be scrapped or sold later on, just get a 2nd hand one. Itis much better to have 2 used non leaking shocks for safety sake.Especially if its just a work hack.

But ideally for it to be done properly 2 brand new ones.

awesome, can you please stay off the road while everyone else is using it!

i wish nz wof requirements required shocks to do more than just leak. a huge portion of the cars on the road in nz have TERRIBLE shocks in them, just nobody cares.

johnf_456, Feb 28, 7:34am
Keeping cars on the road legal is hard enough let alone this. But yes.
