I have noticed that Repco and Superheap sell "universal" top up fuid for automatic transmissions, which is claimed to be able to mix with whatever is already in the transmission. In light of frequent advice on this board about the importance of using the correct ATF for the vehicle, surely using such fuid would be a recipe for disaster!

Nope- SOME cars require a special kind of atfeven down to for a few years actually only being able to buy the "factory " oil. mut on the whole its not an issue.This is of course talking about AUTO boxes not CVT orDSG et al.--

There is no universal trans fluid oil, there is no universal power steering fluid, there is no universal engine oil. There are some that cover a lot of vehicles, but not everything. And generally the non-OE fluids will be quite specific. BMW, Merc, VW etc all have their own fluids, Honda have their own trans fluid, Toyota have their own, CVTs are different to everything else, some manual boxes run Dexron. Don't just throw any old trans fluid in
