Help me please. ive done something stupid

dannydmp, Mar 4, 1:06am
Just sold a cheap runabout car i had for $1000 last week to this seemingly nice guy, he came over, payed the money, told me he would change the ownership on that same day, its been a week now and i logged into carjam & bought a new report & still shows me as the most current owner (yes yes i know guys. i deserve a big slap on the wrists for letting someone drive off with a car in my name) anyways ive lost this guys number out of my phone and he bought it through a classified i made. what should i do now to get this car out of my name! my friend told me to deregister it because its their fault for not changing ownership over in the agreed time. i dont know! help me! pleeease :)

i think you can go to an LTSA agent, testing station etc and fill out a form saying you have dispossed of it . Do you have the buyers name address etc.!

cowboy110, Mar 4, 5:40am
Don't rely on carjam for up to date information. They can be months behind. Suggest you go into VTNZ or a post shop, explain the situation and ask them to check if the car is still registered in your name.If it's not, all good.If it is, then you've got a bit of work to do tracking down the buyer.

The free reports on carjam are old.

Their paid for reports are up to the minute.

intrade, Mar 4, 6:06am
did you do your part of the sold thing. When i sell a car i pay the 10$ to transfere to new owner cheaper then any fines later on from them.

countrypete, Mar 4, 7:20am
Ha ha.I read the thread header and guessed the guy must have bought a VW with DSG.This is much less serious.Just go to your local VTNZ and they will sort the issue for you or provide info for you to do so.

andrea_w, Mar 4, 9:55am
I just looked up my car (using the free carjam) and it's 15 months out of date lol

intrade, Mar 4, 10:04am
yes because that was the last time somone looked your car up. its no longer free to look up this information, the government wants money for looking it up and carjam has to pay them , so what they did is just store the information once somone looked it up for indefinetly like a snapshot so other people can get that snapshot also for free. You have to logon to your carjam account that is free to makie and you get 3 free lookups from carjam, so if you want to know todays status you have to use one of your free lookups to see it as carjam has to pay the government for your 3 free ones also so its limmited now as they cant afford to pay the government and give unlimmited lookups out for free no more.

dannydmp, Mar 4, 10:11am
hey guys. nope i definitely have the most up to date information from carjam. i purchased the $10 report last night with the visa card to get the ownership history etc. Unfortunately i dont have the buyers name or address, handover of the car was really rushed as i was running late for a meeting and he said he had an interview for something in 20mins. so yes. big stuff up on my end. will give vtnz a ring and see what they say. thanks guys

quickbuck, Mar 4, 10:18am
So I take it you didn't give him a receipt either then!
Report it stolen.

dannydmp, Mar 4, 10:31am
haha yeh i did give him a receipt. was just a quick scribble saying how much he paid & the number plate & model, then i signed it. i just feel like deregistering it. over a week is plenty of time for him to change the ownership into his name. im scared he may of clocked up fines already, (cringes at the thought of seeing mail in the letter box)

quickbuck, Mar 4, 10:37am
Damn so he has proof he hasn't stolen it.
There is a form that you fill out (and you can do it on line here: https://transact.nzta.govt.nz/transactions/NoticeOfDisposal/entry.aspx) BUT you need their name and address. But I guess you already know this.
Do you still have his e-mail!
Tell him you will have no choice to deregister if he doesn't keep up his end of the deal.

dannydmp, Mar 4, 10:48am
Yup i knew about that form. didnt even think to grab his name or address because i was in such a rush to get to my meeting that day. i had the car listed through a classified so he just called my phone (call history has since been deleted, grrr. haha) dont have his email. thanks for the awesome advice quickbuck. what would be the best course of action in your opinion! it was only a clapped out but still running, wof, regd $1000 car

bitsy_boffin, Mar 4, 10:52am
It's not hard to understand people, really.

If you look up a vehicle on carjam and somebody has already looked it up in the past, carjam shows the last lookup results to you for FREE without even being logged in.

If nobody has looked it up, or you want an up to date record, you can PAY to do that or log in and using one of your 3 free fresh lookups.

The OP says he PAID for a lookup at carjam, that means it is up-to-date.

quickbuck, Mar 4, 10:58am
In this day in age, it is a tricky one. IF he doesn't know where you live, then deregistering it will be the easy way.
This though would be a last resort.

In a small town I would ask the police to look out for it, and give the driver a friendly reminder. In the big city though, that might be a little harder to do. They would be too busy with other stuff.

lankylass, Mar 4, 11:09am
As suggested previously go into your local LTVA and see if there is a form you can complete saying that you have sold the car but don't have the name & address of the purchaser so that if he does incur fines for speeding etc., there will be a record that you had sold it on a previous date.Is it an offence to buy a car and not re-register it!If so, then if he is stopped by the police for speeding etc it would show up in the police computer that the car is registered in your name.If it appears that he hasn't re-registered it, then perhaps your only remedy is to de-register it yourself, in which case he will be driving around in a de-registered car and if he is stopped, surely that would be an offence! If he is stopped by the police for any infringement they would most certainly want to check his licence and confirm his name & address.

jmma, Mar 4, 11:53am
Can't deregister it, you may be the registered owner, but you are not the legal owner now. Been down that track with an ex.

gooddealz2, Mar 4, 12:03pm
I had a problem with car sold inter Island.I never met buyer. No problems at all.It may have just slipped their minds but informed Registration people I'd sold it and they put a thing on it so that it couldn't be reregistered, wof'd without change being made at that time.

dannydmp, Mar 4, 12:57pm
thank you! that is exactly the information i was looking for! :) will ring land transport agency on monday and alert them about the car no longer being mine.

To the other poster. yes i know that if he gets pulled over by a cop for speeding or something he will get the ticket when they check his license details etc. but. i know that if he drives past a speed camera too fast. that fine would come straight to me :/

stealthbida, Mar 4, 2:56pm
OP said he bought a report from carjam.

tonyrockyhorror, Mar 4, 3:02pm
Complete rubbish. It's live to the Motor Vehicle registration database.

pebbles61, Mar 4, 7:22pm
Well if you haven't got a letter from NZTA by the end of this coming week I'd be going to them to get the ownership changed, if you can find the new owners details. If not, cancel the licence on it. But as someone said before, you're not the owner as such. Becomes a bit of a mess.
