Long shot probably, but have you checked valve clearances lately, or contact breaker points!

if you can smell it as you're driving, then you should be able to see it close inspection around pump, filter, carb and all lines - even under the car) while the engine is running, should show you were it's coming from cannot remember if they had a return line from the pump, if so check right back to the tank, and if it goes back into the top then check the boot floor

Check to float level maybe. If it's had a rekit it may not be set right. Is it flooding and have you had a look at the plugs!

Simple thing to do is park in a clean garage overnight and look for a puddle.

Take it in for an exhaust gas analyzer check, if you can smell fuel then you have a leak somewhere for sure. You say a re kitted carb job done were the jets checked or replaced as they do wear after a while, check the carb float level.again, butterfly shaft wear is possible to overlook too! Carb body warping is also not unknown check that out as well! Only real sure thing to do with carb is to have it totally stripped down and rebuilt by specialist carb firm. Have you checked for a vac leak, have that done as well with a vac gauge you could find the fault here possibly. possible points for vac leak are inlet manifold gasket damaged/loose manifold bolts/nuts vac leak in vacinity of carb or carb itself ( even though it's re kitted) could be defective! Brake booster hose/brake booster itself (if it has one!) What overall condition is the engine in is another reason for excessive fuel usage, if showing wear they will suck fuel like crazy! Check the fuel pump as they can have hidden leakage and check all hoses/pipes and unions etc for leakage.

I liked them a lot and had heaps to do with them years ago.

2bbl Carter by anychance! has it had a tune since it was put back on!

I served my apprenticeship on those and the VG, VH series, also owned a VG for 20 years and economy was not that good but way back then petrol was cheap. If your economy has taken a dive since you have owned the car then it can be corrected to a point. I have converted many points systems to electronic and there are kits out there for the 225 which will eliminate the typical out of tune that points generate. I know if the carb was not set correctly they will use heaps of fuel and if you are smelling fuel after the kit out then something is definitely wrong there, they flood very easily.there maybe a fire risk if petrol is actually leaking outside the carby so get that looked at ASAP.

also check the sump oil for dilution, those AC pumps had a habit of leaking on the inside, you could smell the gas as it exited via the breather as a vapour but you could not see anything, they used multi layered pump diaphams and the buggas would perish after a few years = petrol shots straight into the sump
