Interesting, debate on 6 months WOF

Great, I've always wondered why we have such a system. I do see dorks that literally need to have their hand held to maintain a car but then again too many people here depend on the WOF as a justification of safety and that's not what it is. It's a check, you should be checking your car anyway.

Yearly is much more reasonable imo and the retards are still checked frequently, 2 years is still ok but that's as long as I'd leave it with our hopeless drivers.

Combine that with the police actually following through with that article about warning people rather than straight out tickets and you have a winner.

helsbels2, Mar 29, 1:42pm
but if its yearly it will be a far more comprehensive and dearer test

lordv81, Mar 29, 2:58pm
I would be asking the question of what other new things are going to be introduced if they take away the 6 month WOF.They are using the excuse of NZ being one if not the only country in the world to doa 6 month test. Will we then be forced to pay for a whole year of rego if they make WOFs yearly!or will they follow parts of Australia where you get a WOF when you sell a vehicle.I will hate to see the state of some vehicles if they do follow with other countries. In NZ there is a high number of people who just dont care if they drive with bald tyres until the next WOF or if their tail lights etc dont work.

solarboy, Mar 29, 9:28pm
Heaps of cars (literally) on the roads every day without warrents so their owners aren't being forced to keep them safe and warrentable anyway so the frequency of testing wouldn't make any difference to them.I find it's just a nuisance with 3 cars here each doing between 500 to 800 km max between tests it costs me more for too-frequent tests than it does for oil changes !

fryan1962, Mar 29, 10:07pm
huh
I pay $50 now
I used to pay $60 in Victoria Australia on purchase of car and that was it,So I do not follow your logic,I had one car for 20 years

ninja_man, Mar 30, 5:10am
should stay at 6 months, alot safer than a 12 month period. If it was a 12 month period then alot of cars will be driving around with bald tyres, worn brakepads. surely thats not safe. And at only $20-50 for a wof its hardly that expensive.

pete172, Mar 30, 6:08am
I HAVE ALWAYS CONSIDERED wof to be my 6 monthly safety check,so am not in favor of stretching it out to 12 months

morrisman1, Mar 30, 6:17am
If it goes out to 1 year id like to see things like brake fluid water content, emissions and shock absorbers tested.

Hell, even better would be a requirement to provide evidence of the proper vehicle servicing, but with many people doing their own it may not be practical.

jeffqv, Mar 30, 7:04am
Most countries have them at 12 months and have done so for years. The UK MOT is pretty good, checks most things including emission, something lacking on our roads.

tonyrockyhorror, Mar 30, 7:28am
As always, you will no doubt be able to go as often as you wish. The duration set was only ever a maximum.

tonyrockyhorror, Mar 30, 7:29am
I don't believe emissions testing is a worthwhile exercise beyond visible smoke from oil burning.

girlracer2005, Mar 30, 10:51am
well look at it this way rates and water rates in most places keep going up but wages are not so can you always afford all that money all the time if everything is going up but not ur wages !

olsod2, Mar 30, 11:28am
i have an escudo that i imported from japan 7 years ago its a 1992 model. has had 14 wofs and passed every time.costs me $120 a year to be told my car is safe to be on the road.it does about 5000ks per 6 months.wofs should be done on ks travelled per year.take a company traveller new car can do over 50.000ks per year wof yearly,

bellky, Mar 30, 11:42am
That's a good point^. Maybe something like the WOF expires after 12 months or 5000km (for example), whichever comes first.

[A couple of my cars are lucky to do 500km between WOFs]

bashfulbro, Mar 30, 11:55am
Don`t worry, if they do change it, there will be a whole lot of rules, roadside checks, for things ,like tyres etc.,cars will be impounded, big costs for release etc, they will find many ways to make up for their lost revenue.

therafter1, Mar 30, 1:19pm
Anyone that is silly enough to swallow a line from Brownlee (read the government) to the effect that the review is about saving joe blow a dollar or two here or there is dreaming. Any changes (if any are made) to the system will be of benefit to the government, not the public !

carmedic, Mar 30, 1:30pm
How much of the price you pay for a WoF do you think the government gets, what revenue is lost!

tnt423, Mar 30, 1:57pm
I hope they do get rid of it, pain in the arse getting it done every 6months, I keep my cars in good condition all year round. If they did scrap the current system it wouldn't surprise me if there are more fines put in place for the cops to dish out making them more money.

pebbles61, Mar 30, 3:08pm
Damn right, I'm hardly gonna pay someone to change my oil and brake shoes etc. I hope it goes to 1 year, but of course the motor industry will drag their heels hard.

thewomble1, Mar 30, 8:23pm
Would be interesting to see whatthe most common faults with 6 monthly WOFare and the'extra'danger to the public if the faults were left for another 6 months before being repaired.

mileyfan73, Mar 30, 8:28pm
Six monthly is fine.wouldn't want to leave it any longer with NZ drivers pathological reticence at maintaining their vehicles.Headlights out bald tyres no rego missing number plates cracks in windscreens it's scary!I do 60.000 k a year, alot can wear and go wrong in six months with that much driving.Shouldn't change it.

johnf_456, Mar 30, 8:36pm
Increase it to a year and bring on more personal responsibility. Too many people think a wof means the vehicle is maintenance free for the next 6 months.

ninja_man, Mar 30, 8:50pm
exactly.
